Remote Marine Engineer information

What is a remote marine engineer?

Remote marine engineers are professionals who design, maintain, and repair marine vessels or structures while working from locations away from the ship or offshore site. They leverage digital tools and remote monitoring systems to oversee operations, troubleshoot technical issues, and provide guidance to on-site crews. This role combines traditional marine engineering expertise with advanced communication technology, allowing engineers to support maritime operations from anywhere in the world. Remote marine engineers are increasingly important as the maritime industry adopts more automation and remote management solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote marine engineer?

To thrive as a Remote Marine Engineer, you need a solid background in marine engineering principles, strong problem-solving abilities, and a relevant engineering degree or certification. Familiarity with CAD software, remote monitoring systems, and marine-specific diagnostics tools is essential. Outstanding communication, autonomy, and adaptability are crucial soft skills to effectively manage projects and coordinate with teams from a distance. These skills and qualities are important to ensure the safe, efficient, and compliant operation of marine vessels and systems, even when working remotely.

What are some common challenges faced by remote marine engineers and how can they be addressed?

Remote marine engineers often face challenges such as limited access to on-site equipment, time zone differences when collaborating with global teams, and ensuring reliable connectivity for monitoring and troubleshooting. To address these, it's important to develop strong communication skills, become proficient with remote diagnostic tools, and maintain a well-organized workflow. Proactively scheduling regular check-ins with vessel crews and leveraging digital collaboration platforms can also help bridge the gap and ensure smooth project execution.

What is the difference between Remote Marine Engineer vs Marine Technician?

AspectRemote Marine EngineerMarine Technician
CredentialsEngineering degree, certifications like STCW, marine engineering licensesTechnical certifications, vocational training, on-the-job experience
Work EnvironmentDesign, planning, remote troubleshooting, office or home-basedOnboard ships, maintenance yards, or dockside facilities
Employer & IndustryShipping companies, maritime engineering firms, offshore operatorsShip operators, maintenance companies, port authorities

Remote Marine Engineers focus on designing, planning, and remotely troubleshooting marine systems, often working from an office or home. Marine Technicians are hands-on professionals who perform maintenance and repairs onboard ships or at port facilities. Both roles require technical skills, but their work environments and daily tasks differ significantly.

Job Description

Position: Senior Power Conversion Engineer

Location: Remote

Overview:

The Senior Power Conversion Engineer is responsible for the performance, reliability, and lifecycle management of power conversion systems across the operating fleet, including inverters, battery energy storage systems (BESS), and related AC equipment.

This role serves as the technical owner of power conversion system performance—bridging field execution, engineering analysis, and vendor engagement. The position informs equipment selection and design standards for new projects while driving resolution of both systemic and site-specific issues.

Main Responsibilities:

· Own the performance and availability of inverter and BESS systems across the fleet.

· Drive the resolution of major failures, sustained underperformance, and serial defects.

· Track and analyze performance and reliability metrics to identify emerging risks.

· Provide advanced troubleshooting support for complex inverter, BESS, and AC system issues.

· Translate field observations into clear problem statements and actionable solutions.

· Support O&M teams with structured troubleshooting and escalation.

· Serve as the primary engineering interface with inverter and BESS OEMs and service providers.

· Lead technical escalation and resolution of systemic equipment issues, including root cause identification and corrective action implementation.

· Provide technical oversight of vendor performance, ensuring equipment issues are properly diagnosed, addressed, and resolved.

· Develop and implement strategies for managing power conversion systems across their lifecycle, including spare parts planning, repowering analyses, and monitoring capabilities.

· Review and validate inverter and BESS firmware, controls logic, and operating parameters to ensure proper system performance and grid compliance.

· Support analysis of inverter and BESS interactions with plant-level controls and grid events to improve system response and stability.

· Identify and evaluate key failure modes and develop mitigation strategies to reduce recurrence and fleet-wide risk.

· Support long-term planning for major component replacements and fleet upgrades.

· Drive reliability improvements through PM optimization, failure trend analysis, and standardization of best practices.

· Support development of condition-based maintenance approaches.

· Provide operational insight to Delivery teams to inform equipment selection and specifications.

· Support commissioning review and project turnover into operations.

· Identify and communicate design or operational deficiencies.

· Collaborate closely with Asset Management, O&M, Performance Engineering, and Compliance teams to improve fleet performance.

Qualifications:

Education

· Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Electrical Engineering preferred)

Experience

· 7+ years working with power conversion systems (solar inverters and/or BESS preferred).

· Strong field experience troubleshooting inverter and/or BESS systems.

· Experience working with vendors and cross-functional teams to resolve technical issues.

· Utility-scale solar, storage, or similar industrial power experience preferred.

Skills

· Strong understanding of inverter technologies, BESS systems, and AC power systems.

· Proven ability to diagnose and resolve complex technical issues.

· Experience with root cause analysis and reliability practices.

· Strong communication skills and ability to influence outcomes across teams.

What We're Looking For

· A field-proven engineer who can operate at both site and fleet level.

· Someone who can connect on-site issues to broader system impacts.

· Comfortable owning complex problems and driving them to resolution.
