Job description

The Opportunity:

Tetra Tech is adding an On-Call Field Technician to support a variety of biological surveys and environmental monitoring efforts across the Southwest United States. This role supports our growing Energy Practice, which includes routing, siting, and permitting for wind, solar, transmission, pipelines, battery storage, and other infrastructure projects.

This position is as-needed based on project workload and seasonal demand and offers hands-on experience in field data collection, ecological monitoring, and environmental consulting.

Location: Southwest U.S. (AZ, NV, NM, CO, TX, UT) - Field-Based

Essential Job Functions:

  • Conduct biological field surveys and monitoring, following standardized protocols
  • Collect and record accurate field data using paper forms and tablets
  • Identify plant and wildlife species, including special-status species in the Southwest region
  • Utilize GPS units and mapping tools to support field data collection
  • Operate 4x4 vehicles on unpaved and remote roads
  • Work effectively both independently and as part of a team while maintaining communication with project staff
  • Adhere to all health and safety protocols in remote field environments
  • Conduct activities in line with internal procedures, legislation, and industry standards.
  • Pursue continuous professional development and maintain a high degree of discipline knowledge and awareness.
  • Work in a safe manner at all times and report all health and safety incidents and concerns.
  • Additional duties as required.

Required Qualifications:

  • B.S. in Biology, Environmental Science, Wildlife Management, or related field
  • Demonstrated ability to identify Southwest plant and wildlife species, including special-status species
  • Ability to work in remote locations and challenging environmental conditions
  • Experience using GPS units, tablets, and field data collection tools
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow data collection protocols
  • Ability to work independently and within a team environment
  • Valid driver's license and ability to operate a 4x4 vehicle
  • Flexibility in scheduling, including travel on short notice
  • Willingness to learn and adapt in a dynamic field environment
  • Must possess a valid driver's license with a clean driving record without restrictions.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to perform fieldwork in outdoor environments, including extreme weather conditions (heat, wind, precipitation)
  • Ability to walk long distances on uneven terrain
  • Ability to carry field equipment and work extended hours in the field

Work Environment / Environmental Factors:

  • Field-based role across the Southwest U.S.
  • Exposure to remote locations, rugged terrain, and variable weather conditions
  • Travel required, sometimes on short notice
  • Work is as-needed, depending on project schedules

Compensation:

Pay commensurate with experience.

Pay Range: $27.00 - $32.00 hourly
