Job Description

The Senior Managing Counsel – Information Management provides legal support on complex information management issues, including but not limited to, discovery (includes eDiscovery), third-party requests for information, and enterprise records governance.
This role is responsible for developing and driving strategies and for collaborating closely with internal stakeholders and external parties. Additional responsibilities include conducting legal research, substantive drafting, review, advising, and negotiation for complex matters, as well as providing budget oversight and guidance on the effective use of eDiscovery resources and technology.

Key Responsibilities

  • Providing legal advice and operational oversight for litigation discovery, including engaging and managing external review vendors and overseeing the end to end lifecycle of records preservation, review, and production.

  • Serving as strategic partner to inhouse and external counsel on discovery issues.

  • Reviewing and responding to third-party information requests, such as subpoenas and requests for information, including developing strategy, negotiating scope, and preparing/reviewing objections and responses.

  • Supporting management of enterprise records governance, including reviews and assessments of retention schedules and paper storage.

  • Proactively advising legal and business unit clients on emerging legal issues, risk, and strategic initiatives, including those arising from the adoption of AI and data‑driven solutions.

  • Leading and driving cross‑functional project teams to assess business practices and procedures and proactively counseling on emerging issues and legal risks, as well as on integration of technology‑enabled approaches into legal and business workflows in a compliant and defensible manner.

  • Performs additional responsibilities as assigned. 


Skills & Qualifications

  • Motivated self-starter with legal acumen and business knowledge

  • Ability to counsel on emerging technology risks and defensible records management.

  • End-to-end EDRM (electronic discovery reference model) lifecycle expertise

  • Deep understanding of information governance frameworks

  • Hands-on experience with eDiscovery and legal hold platforms such as Relativity One, Exterro, and Microsoft Purview

  • Exposure to AI-driven legal technologies

  • Demonstrates effective collaboration across teams

  • Ability to communicate views effectively, verbally and in writing, and represent position to internal and external stakeholders, including senior level executives. 

  • Leadership experience on multifaceted projects that involve cross functional teams.

  • Ability to create pragmatic and balanced solutions to legal issues.

  • Ability to counsel on risk based decision making for preservation, scope, and production

  • Displays advanced knowledge of specific legal discipline to connect work back to strategic business results.

  • Ability to understand strategic goals and objectives client intends to achieve from intended action.

  • Ability to determine extent of other AOR (area of responsibility) involvement and understand integration points and play a lead role with other areas of responsibility.

  • Experience utilizing technology and data analytics in daily tasks and decision making; familiarity with legal data analytics tools a plus.

  • Agile and adept at prioritizing assignments/work; consistently meets deadlines; acts with strong sense of urgency.

  • Proven ability to manage a high case load of complex matters in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.

  • Demonstrates a strong commitment to client service excellence.

  • Proven ability to lead and manage employees 

Education & Experience

  • Juris Doctor (J.D) from an accredited law school

  • Active bar membership in good standing in at least one U.S jurisdiction

  • 10+ years of relevant experience 

Remote Work & Travel Expectations:

  • This is a remote role with travel expectations. While candidates may be located anywhere in the U.S., travel will primarily be to Chicago/Northbrook, IL, with occasional travel to Dallas, TX; Charlotte, NC; Scottsdale, AZ; or other sites as needed due to team collaboration and business travel considerations.

Compensation

Compensation offered for this role is 151,700.00 - 221,675.00 annually and is based on experience and qualifications.
