Remote Legal Research information

What is remote legal research?

Remote legal research jobs allow you to work from home to research statues, legislations, and existing case law. In your role as a legal researcher, you may collect information, leverage public resources to find things that may impact a case, identify applicable laws and rules, and summarize your findings for a law firm or legal department. Remote legal researchers also speak with clients, update relevant parties on their findings, respond to discovery requests, coordinate with head lawyers, and apply the principles of logical deduction to information to uncover the truth. Many remote legal research jobs focus on specific types of cases, as they all require a different approach. Remote legal researchers rarely appear in court.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote legal researcher, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Legal Researcher, you need strong analytical skills, in-depth legal knowledge, and typically a law degree or paralegal certification. Familiarity with legal research databases like Westlaw or LexisNexis, and proficiency in document management software, are essential technical competencies. Excellent written communication, attention to detail, and self-motivation are crucial soft skills for effective remote work. These abilities ensure accurate, timely legal analysis and support for clients or legal teams in a virtual environment.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in remote legal research roles, and how can they be addressed?

Remote legal research professionals often face challenges such as limited direct access to colleagues for immediate feedback, managing time zones when working with distributed teams, and ensuring secure access to sensitive legal databases. To address these, it's important to establish clear communication channels, use collaborative tools for sharing research, and stay updated on data security protocols. Regular check-ins with supervisors and participating in virtual legal research forums can also help maintain high-quality work and professional growth.

Job description

Research & Writing Attorney
ALBUQUERQUE, NM
No relocation required - Albuquerque-area and remote-eligible candidates welcome.
About Us
Parnall Law Firm is the most highly reviewed and largest personal injury firm in New Mexico, dedicated to client service and results.
  • Top Culture: "Best Place to Work" and "Top Workplace" for six and five consecutive years, respectively - awards based on anonymous feedback from our employees collected by an independent organization.
  • Unmatched Support: Experienced investigators (retired police officers), dedicated case managers, and paralegals.
  • Team Environment: Collaborative and creative attorneys who foster teamwork and mentorship across every practice team.

Join us to focus on what you do best: delivering the legal research and writing that powers our attorneys' advocacy for injured clients and maximizes case outcomes.
Who Are We Looking For? (Requirements)
  • Active license to practice law in New Mexico, or eligibility for admission.
  • Strong legal research, analysis, and writing skills, with the ability to translate research into persuasive, well-supported drafts.
  • Experience drafting motions, briefs, memoranda, and other litigation documents.
  • Personal injury or civil litigation experience preferred; insurance defense or appellate background is a plus.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with trial attorneys and Team Leads across multiple case teams and manage competing deadlines.

Why Join Us?
  • Competitive Compensation: Commensurate with experience.
  • Sign-on bonus: $25,000 paid incrementally over the first 6 months of employment
  • Comprehensive Benefits: Health, dental, and vision insurance; life, short and long term disability insurance; 401(k) retirement plan.
  • Time Off: Paid time off (PTO) and select paid holidays.
  • Work-Life Balance: Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM - a research and writing role with no court appearances required.

Your Role
As a Research & Writing Attorney, you will provide the legal analysis and drafting that support our trial attorneys' mission: maximizing recovery for the value of our clients' harm and the wrong that caused it. You will be a key member of a team dedicated to making a meaningful impact for injured clients across New Mexico.
Duties / Responsibilities
Legal Research:
  • Research New Mexico and applicable law on liability, damages, coverage, and procedural issues arising in personal injury and premises liability matters.
  • Monitor and summarize developments in New Mexico case law, statutes, and court rules relevant to the firm's practice.

Drafting:
  • Prepare motions, responses, briefs, and legal memoranda in support of pre-litigation and litigation case teams.
  • Draft discovery-related legal analysis and assist with pleadings as needed.

Case Strategy Support:
  • Collaborate with trial attorneys and Team Leads to identify legal issues, anticipate defense arguments, and strengthen case positions.
  • Provide research support for settlement negotiations, mediation, and trial preparation.

General Responsibilities:
  • Deliver timely, well-supported written work product that meets firm quality standards.
  • Collaborate effectively with attorneys and staff to ensure cases move efficiently through the process.
