As of Jun 10, 2026, the average hourly pay for remote ip mpls engineer in the United States is $53.63, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $43.27 and $62.26 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What does a Remote IP MPLS Engineer do?

A Remote IP MPLS Engineer is responsible for configuring, managing, and troubleshooting IP MPLS (Multiprotocol Label Switching) networks from a remote location. Their job includes designing network solutions, maintaining high availability, and ensuring optimal performance for data transmission across large-scale enterprise or service provider networks. They often work with routers, switches, and other networking equipment, implementing security measures and supporting network upgrades and migrations. Remote work allows them to provide support and resolve issues without being physically present at the client's site.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote IP MPLS Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote IP MPLS Engineer, you need a strong understanding of networking fundamentals, routing protocols (like OSPF, BGP), and hands-on experience with MPLS technologies, typically backed by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with network management tools, Cisco or Juniper device configuration, and certifications such as CCNP or JNCIP are highly valued. Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective remote communication set standout professionals apart. These competencies are crucial for ensuring reliable, secure, and scalable network infrastructures in distributed environments.

What is the difference between Remote Ip Mpls Engineer vs Network Operations Center (NOC) Technician?

AspectRemote Ip Mpls EngineerNetwork Operations Center (NOC) Technician
CertificationsCCNP, CCIE, Cisco certificationsCompTIA Network+, Cisco certifications
Work EnvironmentDesign, implement, troubleshoot MPLS networks remotelyMonitor, maintain, and troubleshoot network issues in a NOC setting
Industry UsageTelecommunications, ISPs, large enterprisesService providers, telecom companies, large organizations
Search/Comparison IntentTechnical, design-focused rolesOperational, troubleshooting roles

The Remote Ip Mpls Engineer focuses on designing and implementing MPLS networks remotely, requiring advanced certifications and technical expertise. In contrast, the NOC Technician primarily monitors and troubleshoots network issues in a NOC environment. Both roles are essential in network management but differ in responsibilities, skill requirements, and work settings.

What challenges might a Remote IP MPLS Engineer face when troubleshooting network issues from a distance?

As a Remote IP MPLS Engineer, one common challenge is diagnosing and resolving complex network issues without physical access to equipment. This requires strong skills in using remote monitoring tools, detailed documentation, and effective communication with on-site personnel. Coordinating with different teams and time zones can also add complexity, making it important to be proactive and organized in managing tickets and escalations. Familiarity with a range of network devices and thorough understanding of MPLS protocols are essential to efficiently address issues remotely.

Job description

About Nebius:
Nebius is leading a new era in cloud infrastructure for the global AI economy. We are building a full-stack AI cloud platform that supports developers and enterprises from data and model training through to production deployment, without the cost and complexity of building large in-house AI/ML infrastructure.
Built by engineers, for engineers. From large-scale GPU orchestration to inference optimization, we own the hard problems across compute, storage, networking and applied AI.
Listed on Nasdaq (NBIS) and headquartered in Amsterdam, we have a global footprint with R&D hubs across Europe, the UK, North America and Israel. Our team of 1,500+ includes hundreds of engineers with deep expertise across hardware, software and AI R&D.
The role:
We are looking for an Optical & IP Transport Engineer (DWDM/IP) to own the design, deployment, and operation of large-scale optical transport networks supporting high-density, latency-sensitive infrastructure. You will work at the intersection of DWDM systems and IP/MPLS layers, ensuring reliable packet delivery across long-haul and metro fiber networks.
This role requires deep understanding of optical physics and packet transport, with hands-on responsibility for production networks. You will be involved in end-to-end lifecycle management-from planning and turn-up to troubleshooting complex cross-layer issues impacting performance and availability. The position demands strong diagnostic capabilities, automation-driven operations, and the ability to operate close to the hardware in mission-critical environments.
Your responsibilities will include:
  • Design, deploy, and operate DWDM-based transport networks across long-haul and metro environments
  • Perform wavelength provisioning, optical power tuning, and amplification design (EDFA/Raman) to ensure optimal link performance
  • Troubleshoot cross-layer issues spanning optical transport and IP/MPLS networks, including packet loss, latency, and signal degradation
  • Execute fiber characterization and fault isolation using OTDR, OSA, and BERT tools across various span distances
  • Work directly with production platforms (Ciena, Infinera, ADVA) for provisioning, upgrades, and incident resolution
  • Develop and maintain Python-based automation for optical health checks, telemetry ingestion, and inventory synchronization
  • Participate in network expansions and hardware deployments, including on-site support for critical rollouts and audits
  • Collaborate with IP engineering teams to ensure alignment between optical transport and routing layers
  • Drive root cause analysis and implement preventive measures to improve fleet-wide reliability and performance

What we expect you to have:
  • Strong expertise in DWDM systems, including wavelength routing, optical amplification (EDFA/Raman), and dispersion management in long-haul networks
  • Solid understanding of IP/MPLS fundamentals, including routing protocols such as BGP, OSPF, or IS-IS, and MPLS signaling
  • Hands-on experience with production optical platforms such as Ciena (6500/Waveserver), Infinera, or ADVA
  • Proficiency in Python for automation of operational workflows and network validation tasks
  • Experience using optical diagnostic tools (OTDR, OSA, BERT) for fiber analysis and troubleshooting
  • Ability to debug packet-over-optical issues across layers with precision and speed
  • Willingness to travel to data center and network sites across the US/EU for deployments and audits

It will be an added bonus if you have:
  • Experience with Linux-based network management systems and streaming telemetry for optical monitoring
  • Background in network modernization projects, including migrations from 100G to 400G/800G architectures
  • Familiarity with Segment Routing (SR-MPLS or SRv6) and its interaction with optical transport performance

Working conditions:
  • Remote role based in the United States
  • Travel required for on-site deployments and physical-layer audits

Key employee benefits:
  • Comprehensive health insurance (medical, dental, vision)
  • 401(k) plan with company contribution
  • Generous paid time off and sick leave
  • Paid parental leave
  • Flexible working hours
  • Professional development support

Compensation:
  • Base salary: $125,000 - $180,000 per year
  • Performance-based bonus included

Benefits & Perks:
  • Competitive compensation
  • Career growth and learning opportunities
  • Flexibility and work-life balance
  • Collaborative and innovative culture
  • Opportunity to work on impactful AI projects
  • International environment and talented teams

What's it like to work at Nebius:
Fast moving - Bold thinking - Constant growth - Meaningful impact - Trust and real ownership - Opportunity to shape the future of AI
