Job description

Working Conditions: Note: Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable a qualified individual with a disability(s) to perform the essential functions of this position.

1. This role is primarily onsite, based out of Towson, MD and performed in an office and healthcare technology environment, with work that may include individual workspaces, shared technical areas, remote support, and travel to geographically dispersed Sheppard Pratt sites throughout Maryland.

2. The position may require sitting for extended periods, working at a computer, walking through clinical or administrative locations, and occasionally lifting or moving objects up to 50 lbs.

3. Occasional after-hours support may be required for approved maintenance or project activities

Principal Responsibilities and Duties:

1. Monitor network alerts and assist with alert review, cleanup, and escalation using tools such as SolarWinds.

2. Assist with ticket triage, queue management, and basic issue follow-up using Jira or other designated service management tools.

3. Support inventory tracking and data quality efforts for network equipment, site information, and related infrastructure records.

4. Perform basic network troubleshooting, both remotely and onsite, under the supervision of network team members.

5. Assist with routine maintenance activities, such as firmware update preparation, deployment support, and post-maintenance validation, as assigned.

6. Contribute to defined components of network operations and infrastructure projects, including switching upgrades, monitoring improvements, and disaster recovery documentation.

7. Develop and maintain documentation, including standard operating procedures, runbooks, knowledge base articles, and project notes.

8. Learn and follow required healthcare, security, acceptable use, and change management requirements applicable to the role.

9. Work closely with an assigned mentor and network team members to ensure all assigned tasks are completed accurately, safely, and within approved scope.

10. Participate in team meetings, training activities, and technical shadowing opportunities to build practical networking and infrastructure operations experience.

Professional Development and Learning Outcomes:

Throughout the internship, participants will have the opportunity to develop practical skills and professional experience in enterprise network and infrastructure operations. By the end of the internship, interns are expected to:

1. Gain hands-on experience supporting enterprise network environments across multiple locations.

2. Develop a foundational understanding of network monitoring, alert management, incident response, and operational support processes.

3. Apply classroom knowledge of networking concepts, including TCP/IP, switching, routing, wireless networking, and troubleshooting, in a real-world healthcare technology environment.

4. Learn how change management, cybersecurity, compliance, and operational procedures support reliable and secure technology services.

5. Improve technical documentation skills through the creation and maintenance of runbooks, standard operating procedures, knowledge articles, and project documentation.

6. Participate in infrastructure projects and gain exposure to project planning, implementation, testing, and operational support activities.

7. Strengthen professional communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills through interactions with technical teams, end users, and organizational stakeholders.

8. Receive mentorship and coaching from experienced network engineering professionals to support career growth and exploration of networking and infrastructure career paths.

9. Build familiarity with enterprise technology tools used for monitoring, service management, documentation, and infrastructure operations.

10. Develop an understanding of the unique technology requirements that support

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

1. Meets eligibility requirements under applicable Maryland internship workforce development programs, including one of the following:

a. Current college student pursuing a degree in information technology, networking, cybersecurity, computer science, or a related discipline, with a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or above, who is attending a Maryland higher education institution.

b. Current college student pursuing a degree in information technology, networking, cybersecurity, computer science, or related discipline, with a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or above, who is a Maryland high school graduate attending a higher education institution outside of Maryland.

c. Graduate (within 12 months) of a Maryland higher education institution with a degree in information technology, networking, cybersecurity, computer science, or a related discipline

d. Maryland resident, with a 2 or 4-year degree in in information technology, networking, cybersecurity, computer science, or a related discipline who has been honorably discharged from the U.S. Armed Forces, The National Guard or a Reserve component of the Armed Forces within the last 18 months

2. Foundational understanding of networking concepts, including TCP/IP, switching, routing, wireless networking, and basic troubleshooting methods.

3. Network+ or CCNA coursework, certification, or equivalent practical exposure is preferred.

4. Ability to work 20–40 hours per week and commit to a minimum internship duration of three to four months; longer availability is preferred.

5. Strong communication, documentation, organization, and follow-through skills.

6. Interest in enterprise networking technologies, monitoring platforms, infrastructure operations, and healthcare technology environments.

7. Ability to follow documented procedures, work within defined scope, and escalate issues appropriately.

8. Ability to travel to geographically dispersed Sheppard Pratt sites throughout Maryland as needed, with reliable transportation required.

9. Ability to work effectively with technical staff, end users, and cross-functional teams in a professional environment.

10. Willingness to complete required onboarding and compliance training, including but not limited to; HIPAA, security awareness, acceptable use, and related organizational policies.

11. Demonstrated curiosity, reliability, professionalism, and a willingness to learn through mentorship, hands-on assignments, and feedback.
