Job description

Ready to help craft breweries master their numbers?
If you're tired of timesheets, clients in random industries, and chaotic month-ends, this might be the best role you see this year.
We're Small Batch Standard, a remote accounting, tax, and consulting firm built exclusively to serve the craft brewing industry. In short, we help breweries make more profit so they can focus on brewing great beer.
We're looking for a full-time Brewery Accountant to lead outsourced accounting engagements for 7-14 of our brewery clients.
This role is ideal if you're an experienced Accountant who wants:
  • 100% remote work with no timesheets or hour tracking.
  • One clearly defined niche: you work only with craft breweries.
  • A stable, recurring book of clients you get to know deeply over time.
  • To be in the driver's seat, managing your own workflow and workload.
  • A team filled with self-managing accounting experts dedicated to your growth.
  • A clear path from Accountant → Senior Accountant with promotions and pay increases based on merit, not tenure.
Compensation and Benefits
We develop our accountants with a clear mastery level framework and regular performance reviews. Here's what this role offers:
  • Base Salary: $64,000-$73,000 per year based on skills and experience.
  • Production Bonus: Typically $2,500 to $10,000 per year, paid out monthly.
  • Total Compensation Potential: $64,000-$83,000 per year including base salary and bonus.
  • 100% remote, no in-office requirements, flexible schedule with no time sheets or hours tracking.
  • Full benefits (medical, dental, vision), 3 weeks PTO, and 11 company holidays.
  • Continuing education support through books, courses, and certifications, plus brewery visits and industry conference attendance so you actually see the impact of your work.
  • An all-expenses-paid annual retreat with the SBS team.
What You'll Do
You'll report to an Accounting Manager and will:
  • Own the monthly close for 7-14 brewery clients: QBO, reconciliations, accruals, payroll, inventory, and final review.
  • Be the main accounting point of contact for your clients, answering questions and delivering high-level client service.
  • Coordinate with our Accounting Associates who handle much of the recurring bookkeeping.
  • Prepare and file sales and excise tax for a subset of your clients.
  • Work with our Compliance, Consulting, and Tax teams to ensure they have what they need from your work to do theirs well.
Growth Path
We hire Accountants with the goal of growing them into brewery accounting experts. Here's how that progression works:
  • Level 1: Brewery Accounting Foundation. You'll manage a mix of bookkeeping and accounting work for your clients, build productive relationships as the main accounting contact, and develop brewery-specific accounting knowledge and technical competency.
  • Level 2: Brewery Accounting Competence. You'll transition into primarily close and compliance work by building a solid process with our Associates, who handle most recurring bookkeeping. You'll also execute brewery-specific work and client communication with minimal support and provide feedback to improve our accounting processes.
  • Level 3: Brewery Accounting Mastery. Your focus shifts almost exclusively to higher-level accounting and compliance, supported by rock-solid collaboration with Associates and our Compliance, Consulting, and Tax teams. You'll handle complex client communication and troubleshooting independently and mentor new hires while driving meaningful process improvements across the team.
How We Measure Success
You'll know exactly what winning looks like:
  • Your clients' books are consistently accurate and delivered on time.
  • Your Accounting Manager rarely needs to jump in to fix issues.
  • You've reached and maintained your target client book (number and mix of clients).
  • Clients trust you as their go-to accounting contact and provide positive feedback.
About You
You'll be a strong fit if you:
  • Have the technical chops. You've got the fundamentals covered. Integrations with QBO? Got it. Payroll accruals? No problem. Inventory reconciliation? In your sleep. Chart of accounts re-organization? All in a day's work.
  • Are a problem solver. You keep a level head when tech breaks or transactions go rogue, getting to the root cause quickly.
  • Are a skilled communicator. You can translate "accounting-speak" into clear, straightforward communication for brewery owners.
  • Enjoy continuity. You thrive on the regular rhythm of working with a core set of clients week-in and week-out.
  • Are a "Manager of One." Unlike working within a traditional firm, in this role you'll be in the driver's seat, managing your workflow and workload in order to meet our high standards.
Requirements
To be successful in this role you'll need to have:
  • 2+ years of full-cycle, accrual-based accounting experience managing multiple clients or entities.
  • Strong proficiency with QuickBooks Online; experience with Bill.com is a plus.
  • Ability to work effectively in a remote environment (prior remote experience helpful but not required).
  • Reliable internet, a quiet setup for video calls, and availability during normal business hours (9-5, Monday-Friday).
  • Must be based in the U.S. and legally authorized to work in the U.S. without needing visa sponsorship.
  • Preferred: public firm, outsourced accounting, or similar experience; prior experience with tools like Square, Toast, Gusto, Podio or Asana.
Our Culture
We're fully remote, with team members and clients located all across the U.S. and have developed our own unique culture we call The SBS Way. The right person for this role will personally subscribe to and use the following core values as a guide for their day-to-day work:
  • Be Antifragile. Everything we do is an opportunity for learning and continuous improvement.
  • Play The Long Game. We make decisions in the long-term interest of our firm, our clients, and our industry.
  • Act as A Team of Experts. We collaborate and provide feedback to develop ourselves and deliver exceptional results for our clients.
How To Apply
If this sounds like the right next step in your accounting career, click "Apply" and include a short note on why craft breweries and remote work are a fit for you.
Our hiring process:
  • A short online application with a few brief screening questions (about 10-15 minutes).
  • 45-minute accounting-focused session with an Accounting Manager to align on the details.
  • 30-minute culture fit call with our Director of Operations to make sure our firm is right for you.
  • Final conversation with our CEO to discuss your career trajectory and answer any final questions you have before our final decision and offer.

We review applications daily and move quickly, aiming to complete the process within 7-14 days for strong candidates.
