What is a Remote Infrastructure Security Engineer?

A Remote Infrastructure Security Engineer is a cybersecurity professional who is responsible for protecting an organization's IT infrastructure, such as servers, networks, and cloud services, from security threats. They work remotely, using specialized tools to monitor systems, detect vulnerabilities, and respond to incidents. Their duties often include implementing firewalls, managing access controls, and ensuring compliance with security standards. These engineers play a crucial role in maintaining the safety and integrity of digital assets while supporting teams from any location.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Infrastructure Security Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Infrastructure Security Engineer, you need a solid background in cybersecurity, network architecture, and systems administration, often supported by a relevant degree and certifications like CISSP or CompTIA Security+. Familiarity with security tools such as firewalls, intrusion detection/prevention systems (IDS/IPS), SIEM solutions, and cloud security platforms is essential. Strong analytical thinking, effective communication, and the ability to work independently are standout soft skills in this role. These skills and qualifications are crucial to proactively protect organizational infrastructure, rapidly respond to threats, and ensure secure remote operations.

The Remote Infrastructure Security Engineer focuses on securing cloud and remote infrastructure environments, while the Network Security Engineer specializes in protecting network hardware and on-premises or cloud networks. Both roles require similar certifications and often work remotely, but their primary focus areas differ, aligning with different aspects of cybersecurity infrastructure.

How does a Remote Infrastructure Security Engineer typically collaborate with other IT teams to ensure system security?

As a Remote Infrastructure Security Engineer, collaboration with various IT teams is integral to maintaining a secure environment. You'll often work closely with network administrators, system engineers, and DevOps teams to assess vulnerabilities, implement security controls, and respond to incidents. Regular virtual meetings, shared documentation platforms, and ticketing systems are commonly used to coordinate efforts and ensure everyone is aligned on security protocols. This collaborative approach helps proactively address risks and ensures compliance with organizational security standards.

Job description

Optiv is hiring an IT Cloud Engineer. The ideal candidate will have deep expertise in VMware technologies (vSphere, ESXi, vCenter, NSX, vSAN) and the ability to integrate those environments with modern cloud services. This position plays a key role in building scalable, secure, and cost-effective hybrid solutions while improving automation, monitoring, and operational efficiency.
This individual will work closely with infrastructure, security, and application teams to ensure a smooth migration process, maintain compliance standards, and support ongoing optimization of both VMware and cloud environments.

How you'll make an impact

  • Design, deployment, and optimization of enterprise VMware environments (vSphere, vCenter, ESXi) supporting hybrid and cloud migration strategies

  • Assess existing on-prem VMware workloads and develop migration strategies to AWS, Azure, or GCP (e.g., VMware Cloud on AWS, Azure VMware Solution, GCVE)

  • Design and implement highly available, scalable, and secure hybrid cloud architectures leveraging VMware and native cloud services

  • Deploy and maintain Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using Terraform, CloudFormation, or ARM templates for both VMware and cloud-native environments

  • Manage and optimize core VMware components including clusters, storage (vSAN), networking (NSX), and disaster recovery solutions

  • Support and optimize IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS integrations as part of cloud migration and modernization initiatives

  • Ensure seamless connectivity and workload mobility between on-prem VMware environments and cloud platforms

  • Lead end-to-end VMware workload migrations to the cloud, including discovery, assessment, planning, execution, and post-migration optimization

  • Define migration patterns (rehost, refactor, re-platform) based on application dependencies and business requirements

  • Coordinate with application, network, and security teams to ensure successful migration outcomes

  • Troubleshoot complex hybrid environment issues across VMware and cloud platforms

  • Partner with cloud architects, infrastructure teams, security, and application teams to align migration strategies with business priorities

  • Create and maintain detailed technical documentation, migration runbooks, and best practices

  • Contribute to architectural standards and reference designs

What we're looking for

  • 5+ years of hands-on cloud engineering experience (AWS, Azure, or GCP) with prior general IT/infrastructure background

  • 7+ years of overall IT infrastructure or systems experience, including server, network, and storage platforms

  • Strong experience with at least one major cloud provider: AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform (GCP)

  • Expertise in compute, storage, networking, and security services

  • Experience with hybrid and multi-cloud architectures

  • Experience migrating workloads from on-premises environments (e.g., VMware) to cloud platforms

  • Proficiency with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools such as: Terraform, CloudFormation / ARM /Bicep

  • Strong scripting and automation skills:Python, PowerShell, Bash

  • Working knowledge of security frameworks such as NIST, CIS, or ISO 27001

  • Experience implementing cloud security guardrails, identityfirst access controls, logging, encryption, and compliance controls

  • One or more active cloud certifications such as:AWS Certified (Associate or Professional), Microsoft Azure Certified, or Google Cloud Professional Engineer highly preferred

  • Ability to travel up to 10%
