What is a remote information technology?

A Remote Information Technology (IT) job involves performing IT-related tasks, such as software development, cybersecurity, system administration, or technical support, from a remote location rather than an office. These roles rely on internet connectivity, cloud-based tools, and collaboration software to manage and support IT infrastructure. Remote IT jobs offer flexibility and can be done from anywhere, making them ideal for professionals looking for work-life balance. Companies hiring for remote IT roles often seek skilled individuals who can troubleshoot technical issues, develop software, or manage networks independently.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in remote information technology?

To thrive in a Remote Information Technology role, you need a solid foundation in IT systems, troubleshooting, and network management, often demonstrated through a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with remote collaboration tools, cybersecurity measures, and certifications such as CompTIA A+, Network+, or Microsoft Certified IT Professional are highly beneficial. Strong communication, time management, and proactive problem-solving abilities are crucial soft skills for excelling in a remote environment. These skills ensure you can effectively support and secure systems, collaborate with distributed teams, and maintain productivity without in-person oversight.

How does working remotely in information technology impact collaboration and communication with team members?

Working remotely in Information Technology often means collaborating with team members across different locations and time zones, primarily through digital channels like video meetings, chat platforms, and project management tools. Clear and proactive communication is essential to ensure everyone stays aligned on project goals, deadlines, and troubleshooting efforts. Teams frequently schedule regular check-ins and utilize shared documentation to keep workflows transparent and efficient. While you may have fewer face-to-face interactions, most organizations in this field provide structured virtual support and training to help you integrate smoothly with your colleagues and stay connected.

Job description

Company LogoOverview

Keller is the world leader in geotechnical construction and deep foundations. With a North American presence of over 100 years, we operate as the market leader with over 50 offices throughout the US and Canada. By connecting global resources and local experience, Keller develops innovative, practical, and cost-effective solutions to geotechnical challenges. Our values of integrity, collaboration, and excellence enable us to lead the industry in providing the optimal solution for our clients

Keller is looking for an experienced IT Business Analyst. This role can be fully remote. Preference will be given to candidates in the Eastern time zone.

The IT Business Analyst plays an important role in analysing, documenting and supporting the definition of business and IT requirements for projects and initiatives delivered through the IT PMO, with a primary focus on Operations and Engineering. The role works closely with Operations and Engineering stakeholders to understand business needs, clarify processes and translate requirements into practical IT solutions that support Keller's operational delivery and engineering capability. While Operations and Engineering represent the primary focus areas, the Business Analyst will also support initiatives across other business functions as required, ensuring solutions are aligned to Keller's broader strategic and operational objectives.

Responsibilities

Business Analysis

  • Gather, analyse and document business and system requirements for Operations and Engineering initiatives, and for other business functions as portfolio priorities require.
  • Translate operational, engineering and wider business needs into clear functional and non-functional requirements.
  • Develop process maps, workflow documentation, user stories and requirements artefacts that support solution design and delivery.
  • Support business cases, impact assessments and options analysis for IT-enabled change.
  • Identify opportunities to simplify, standardise and improve business processes.

Operations, Engineering and Business Function Alignment

  • Work with Operations and Engineering stakeholders to understand site-based, project delivery and construction-related requirements.
  • Support initiatives across other business functions, adapting analysis and stakeholder engagement to the needs of each area.
  • Ensure requirements reflect practical operational environments, field-based teams, regional ways of working and broader enterprise requirements.
  • Support alignment between IT teams, business sponsors, service owners, functional leaders and delivery partners.
  • Help ensure solutions are usable, scalable and appropriate for Operations, Engineering and other business functions.

Project Support

  • Support PMO-led initiatives from concept through implementation, working closely with project managers and delivery teams.
  • Facilitate workshops, interviews and stakeholder discussions to clarify scope, requirements and acceptance criteria.
  • Support test planning, User Acceptance Testing (UAT), defect triage and business readiness activities.
  • Maintain requirements traceability throughout the project lifecycle.

Stakeholder Management

  • Build effective working relationships with business and IT stakeholders across regions and functions.
  • Build strong partnerships across Operations, Engineering and other business functions to ensure solutions are aligned to both local and enterprise requirements.
  • Communicate analysis outputs clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Work across multiple business functions and regions, adapting priorities and support based on portfolio demand and organisational priorities.
  • Support stakeholder engagement, decision-making and prioritisation activities.
  • Help manage expectations through clear communication, documentation and follow-through.

Governance and Standards

  • Ensure requirements and documentation comply with IT PMO standards and agreed delivery processes.
  • Maintain appropriate documentation, traceability and auditability of requirements.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of business analysis practices, templates and standards.
Qualifications

Essential

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Information Systems, Computer Science, Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Experience as a Business Analyst within an IT, transformation or change environment.
  • Strong requirements gathering, analysis, process mapping and documentation skills.
  • Ability to translate business needs into clear, structured and traceable requirements.
  • Experience working within project or programme delivery environments.
  • Ability to work effectively with operational, engineering, site-based, functional and technical stakeholders.
  • Experience partnering with stakeholders across multiple business functions and balancing competing priorities.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving and facilitation skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and relationship management capability.

Desirable

  • Experience supporting Operations and Engineering functions within construction, infrastructure, industrial, manufacturing or field-service environments.
  • Experience working with enterprise platforms such as ERP, Asset Management, Project Management, HCM, GIS, Service Management or related business applications.
  • Knowledge of Agile, Scrum, Waterfall and hybrid delivery methodologies.
  • Experience using business analysis and process modelling tools such as Visio, Lucidchart, Azure DevOps, Jira or equivalent platforms.
  • Familiarity with data analysis, reporting and business intelligence tools such as Power BI, SQL or similar technologies.
  • Professional qualification or certification such as CBAP, CCBA, PMI-PBA, IIBA-AAC, Certified Scrum Product Owner or similar Agile certification.
  • Experience working within a global organisation supporting geographically distributed teams.
  • Previous experience working within a PMO or structured governance environment.

Personal Attributes

  • Analytical and detail-oriented.
  • Practical, curious and keen to understand operational and wider business challenges.
  • Strong communicator who can work across technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Collaborative, supportive and confident working with distributed teams.
  • Organised, methodical and delivery-focused.
  • Comfortable working with ambiguity and change.
