Job description

Join a team dedicated to improving roadway safety and mobility across the region. As a Traffic Incident Management [TIM] Coordinator, you will serve as a key liaison among emergency responders, transportation agencies, and operational partners to coordinate effective incident response and help keep traffic moving safely and efficiently. The TIM Coordinator work includes participation in program planning, performance data analysis, oversight of incident management programs, meeting coordination, preparation of technical correspondence and reports, contacts with and/or appearances before local officials, civic and community groups, public agencies, etc. This will be primarily remote with occasional office visits to the Salem, VA office.

What you will be doing:

  • Lead regional traffic incident management and emergency response coordination efforts
  • Respond to major incidents and support quick-clearance operations (includes on-call requirement)
  • Build partnerships with law enforcement, fire, EMS, towing, and emergency management agencies
  • Coordinate traffic control, detours, and roadway recovery activities
  • Analyze operational performance and develop improvement recommendations
  • Facilitate stakeholder meetings, training programs, and incident reviews
  • Support weather response, emergency preparedness, and special event planning
  • Monitor contractor performance and support transportation operations program objectives
  • Promote roadway safety, mobility, and reliable transportation system performance across Southwest Virginia
  • Occasional in-state travel for to training and meetings

What you need to be successful in this role:

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED) required
  • Successfully pass state and federal criminal history background checks, including VDOT fingerprint-based Criminal History Records Check (CHRC)
  • Possess and maintain a valid Virginia Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record
  • Successfully complete a pre-employment drug screening and participate in required random drug testing
  • Reside within a reasonable commuting distance of Carroll and Pulaski Counties to ensure timely response to major traffic incidents, emergencies, weather events, and other transportation operations activities
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including after-hours response to major incidents, emergencies, weather events, and special events
  • Ability to obtain and maintain required certifications and training, including NIMS/ICS, First Aid/CPR, and other VDOT or program-specific requirements
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather and roadway environments and safely perform the physical demands of the position, including operating vehicles, walking on uneven terrain, lifting equipment, and wearing required personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Strong situational awareness and commitment to roadway, responder, and public safety
  • Ability to make sound decisions and exercise good judgment in dynamic, time-sensitive environments
  • Strong critical thinking, problem-solving, and incident coordination skills
  • Ability to work independently while effectively collaborating with transportation, public safety, emergency management, and contractor partners
  • Professional verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to develop and maintain productive relationships with stakeholders and partner agencies
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and other computer-based applications used for reporting, communications, record keeping, and training
  • Working knowledge of Traffic Incident Management (TIM), roadway operations, and emergency response principles
  • Familiarity with the National Incident Management System (NIMS) and Incident Command System (ICS)
  • Knowledge of regional roadway networks and transportation operations within Southwest Virginia
  • Ability to analyze operational information and prepare clear reports, presentations, and recommendations
  • Proficiency in radio communications and transportation/public safety telecommunications systems

Iteris anticipates paying an hourly rate between $25.00 to $30.00 for this role. Actual pay offered may be below or above these amounts, depending on the individual’s job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
