Job description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Trade Compliance Specialist based in Netherlands.

This is a high-ownership opportunity to build and manage trade compliance operations for a rapidly scaling international marketplace.
You will sit close to day-to-day fulfilment activities, overseeing customs documentation, classifications, broker relationships, and duty management.
The role combines operational execution with commercial thinking, helping ensure cross-border shipments remain compliant while identifying opportunities to reduce costs.
You will work across Europe, the UK, the US, and other international markets as the business expands into new product categories and geographies.
As the first dedicated specialist in this area, you will establish processes, operating rhythms, and standards rather than simply inheriting an existing framework.
You will collaborate with legal, fulfilment, operations, brokers, carriers, manufacturers, and product teams to keep international trade running smoothly.
This is an ideal role for a detail-oriented trade professional who enjoys autonomy, complexity, and making a measurable business impact.

Accountabilities
  • Prepare and manage shipment documentation and commercial invoices, ensuring information is complete, accurate, and properly stored and accessible.
  • Apply approved HTS classifications and country-of-origin determinations consistently across shipment processes and relevant systems.
  • Manage day-to-day relationships with customs brokers, coordinating clearance activities, reviewing performance, and ensuring broker practices remain aligned with established compliance frameworks.
  • Monitor duties as part of landed shipping costs, identify unexpected duty outcomes, and coordinate claims or corrections when customs or broker errors are discovered.
  • Resolve routine customs queries during import and export clearance and ensure declarations are completed accurately and efficiently.
  • Manage the duty drawback program on a day-to-day basis, coordinating with external specialists and preparing, validating, and tracking claims through submission.
  • Monitor US import bond compliance and proactively address issues that could affect continuity on critical shipping lanes.
  • Partner with manufacturers and suppliers, initially including partners in India, to ensure export documentation and processes support compliant and duty-efficient international shipping.
  • Identify and pursue legitimate duty-saving opportunities through applicable free trade agreements and preferential duty schemes.
  • Develop and document scalable trade compliance processes as the business expands into new markets and increasingly complex duty regimes.
  • Escalate complex classification, regulatory interpretation, or policy questions to the appropriate legal and compliance stakeholders.
  • Connect trade compliance activities with commercial outcomes by identifying opportunities to improve landed costs, reduce errors, and strengthen operational efficiency.
Requirements
  • Proven professional experience in global trade compliance, customs operations, or a closely related field, with hands-on exposure to US, UK, and EU import and export processes.
  • Direct experience managing customs broker relationships and high-volume shipment documentation.
  • Practical experience with duty drawback, tariff recovery, customs claims, or similar reclaim processes.
  • Strong understanding of customs documentation, import/export declarations, tariff classification, country-of-origin requirements, and duty management.
  • Comfortable working independently as an individual contributor with significant ownership and autonomy.
  • Highly detail-oriented and process-minded, with the ability to establish effective operating procedures where formal processes may not yet exist.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills and experience coordinating external brokers, carriers, manufacturers, and internal legal, fulfilment, operations, and product teams.
  • Commercially minded approach, with the ability to connect compliance decisions to landed costs, efficiency, risk reduction, and broader business objectives.
  • Strong organisational and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-moving international environment.
  • Based in Europe or the UK and comfortable collaborating across international time zones.
  • Experience with free trade agreements and preferential duty schemes, such as India-UK, EU-UK, EU-India, or UAE-India, is an advantage.
  • Experience in jewellery, diamonds, gemstones, luxury goods, or other high-value product logistics is beneficial.
  • Familiarity with Indian export processes or experience in a rapidly scaling international e-commerce or marketplace environment is a plus.
Benefits
  • Competitive compensation package.
  • Fully remote working arrangement within a European time zone.
  • Flexible working environment and working hours.
  • Unlimited holiday allowance.
  • Opportunities for professional growth, continuous learning, and skill development.
  • High degree of autonomy and ownership over the development of trade compliance operations.
  • Opportunity to join a rapidly scaling international business during a significant phase of expansion.
  • Collaborative, low-hierarchy working culture with strong cross-functional exposure.
  • Intellectually challenging work with a direct impact on international operations, cost efficiency, and business scalability.
  • Opportunity to work across multiple global markets and complex international trade environments.
