The Human Resources Business Partner I serves as a strategic advisor to client organizations, partnering with business leaders to align people strategies with business objectives. This position provides consultative and operational support across a broad range of human resources functions, including employee relations, compliance, payroll administration, performance management, talent development, workforce planning, compensation, organizational effectiveness, and HR technology solutions.

The HR Business Partner I develops trusted relationships with clients, provides proactive HR guidance, and delivers practical solutions that support business growth and employee success. This role requires a strong balance of strategic thinking and hands-on execution, with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced consulting environment.

Our clients have locations and employees throughout the United States, with a concentration in New England. This is a fully remote position; however, the successful candidate must be able to travel to client locations if within drivable distance.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary HR partner and trusted advisor for assigned client accounts.
  • Provide strategic and operational HR guidance to clients on employee relations, performance management, policy interpretation, compliance, and workforce management matters.
  • Partner with business leaders to identify workforce challenges and develop practical HR solutions aligned with organizational objectives.
  • Consult with managers regarding employee performance, disciplinary actions, coaching, conflict resolution, workplace investigations, and employee retention strategies.
  • Assist clients with organizational design, workforce planning, succession planning, and talent development initiatives.
  • Develop, interpret, evaluate, and update employee handbooks, policies, procedures, and HR programs.
  • Advise clients on the application and interpretation of federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations.
  • Plan and conduct HR assessments and audits; evaluate findings and present recommendations through written reports and client presentations.
  • Lead compensation-related initiatives, including job description development, pay equity reviews, and compensation benchmarking projects.
  • Develop comprehensive job descriptions to support FLSA, ADA, compensation, and organizational structure decisions.
  • Manage and support payroll administration activities utilizing a variety of Human Capital Management (HCM), Human Resource Information Systems (HRIS), and payroll platforms based on client needs.
  • Maintain and oversee employee data across multiple HRIS and payroll systems while ensuring data integrity, confidentiality, and compliance.
  • Utilize various payroll, HRIS, and HCM platforms to effectively support client payroll processing, employee data management, reporting, and workforce administration needs.
  • Troubleshoot payroll, HRIS, and employee data issues while coordinating with clients, internal teams, and third-party vendors as needed.
  • Generate and analyze payroll, workforce, and HR metrics using various HR technology platforms to support client decision-making.
  • Adapt quickly to client-specific HR technology environments and become proficient in multiple payroll and HR systems.
  • Deliver client training on HR policies, compliance requirements, leadership development, employee relations, and HR best practices.
  • Partner with the HR Practice Manager and other team members to develop, coordinate, and deliver quarterly training programs for clients and internal staff.
  • Assist in creating, maintaining, and enhancing training materials, presentations, toolkits, and educational resources.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to identify training needs, recommend content topics, and contribute subject matter expertise to strengthen the firm's HR practice.
  • Support the HR Practice Manager in evaluating HR trends, regulatory updates, and best practices for inclusion in training and client service offerings.
  • Work closely with the Practice Manager to ensure the smooth transition, escalation, and resolution of client issues.
  • Act as a liaison between clients and internal cross-functional teams to ensure consistent service delivery.
  • Take responsibility for the successful and timely completion of assigned projects and client deliverables.
  • Maintain knowledge of HR industry trends, best practices, and employment legislation.
  • Mentor and support junior HR team members through coaching, guidance, and knowledge sharing.
  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance.
  • Travel to client locations if needed and within drivable distance from remote location.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential responsibility satisfactorily.

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of 8-10 years of progressive Human Resources experience.
  • Experience serving as an HR Business Partner, HR Consultant, Senior HR Generalist, or similar strategic HR role.
  • Human Resources consulting experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience supporting multiple business units, clients, or locations.
  • Demonstrated experience leading HR projects from planning through implementation.
  • Experience advising managers and senior leaders on employee relations, performance management, organizational development, and workforce planning initiatives.
  • Extensive experience processing payroll and administering employee data using multiple HCM, HRIS, and payroll platforms.
  • Professional HR certification (SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR, or SPHR) preferred.
  • Experience using isolved technology preferred

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Strong knowledge of federal and state employment laws and regulations.
  • Demonstrated expertise in employee relations, coaching, conflict resolution, performance management, and workplace investigations.
  • Strong understanding of payroll administration processes and compliance requirements.
  • Working knowledge of multiple Human Capital Management (HCM), Human Resource Information Systems (HRIS), and payroll platforms.
  • Experience utilizing payroll and HR systems such as ADP, Paylocity, Paychex, UKG, Workday, BambooHR, isolved, or similar platforms preferred.
  • Ability to learn, navigate, and support client-specific payroll and HR systems with minimal training.
  • Experience auditing employee data, payroll records, and system-generated reports to ensure accuracy and compliance.
  • Strong business acumen with the ability to align HR strategies to organizational goals.
  • Ability to build credibility and influence leaders at all levels of an organization.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong training, presentation, and facilitation skills, both virtually and in person.
  • Experience creating training materials, presentations, guides, and educational resources.
  • Excellent project management, organizational, and time management skills.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
  • Ability to manage difficult conversations with professionalism and confidence.
  • Extraordinary ability to manage multiple priorities and shift focus between competing demands while maintaining accuracy and responsiveness.
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft 365 applications, including Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Teams, and related technologies.
