Job description

CA HR/Employer Defense Attorney

If you are a seasoned Management-side Labor and Employment attorney who loves to bridge the gap between complex legal statutes and real-world HR strategy, WITHOUT using legalese, read on...

At The HR Law Firm, we do things differently. We’ve stripped away the rigid politics, billable-hour obsession, and outdated structures of traditional firms to build a forward-thinking, fully remote environment. We are looking for a mature professional whose legal expertise is rooted in a deep, foundational understanding of Human Resources principles and California Employment Law because they have actually worked IN HR, not just with HR. Here, your HR experience isn't just an asset-it is central to how you advise, protect, and empower California small business owners.

Why This Role is Different:

We don't just defend clients after a crisis occurs; we partner with them to build sustainable workplaces BEFORE the crisis to give them peace of mind and empower them in the day-to-day flare-ups. This role is designed for a seasoned attorney who thrives on direct, hands-on client advisory and practical, human-centric problem-solving.

  • Strategic HR & Legal Guidance: You will use your dual background to guide small business owners through the nuances of workforce management, ensuring compliance while understanding the operational realities of running a business.

  • True Client Partnership: You will serve as a trusted, accessible advisor, solving complex employment puzzles and watching small businesses thrive because of your proactive counsel.

  • Structure Meets Innovation: We love a good checklist, clear milestones, and efficient workflows. We use modern tools to streamline the practice of law so you can focus on high-impact client relationships.

  • Small Business Focused: We fight for the little guy! Clients are real people, with real dreams, and real legacies to leave. They are savvy about their business but not necessarily about the law, which is why they lean on you so closely.

Who You Are:

  • An HR-Minded Attorney: You are an active member of the California Bar with substantial management-side Labor and Employment experience, critically enhanced by a background working directly IN Human Resources. You understand that employment law doesn't exist in a vacuum.

  • Rooted in Warmth and Care: You naturally lead with empathy, approachability, and genuine compassion. Clients often come to us stressed or overwhelmed; your reassuring presence and sincere care for their well-being are just as vital to your counsel as your legal acumen.

  • A Natural Advisor: You possess the maturity, empathy, and professional confidence to guide business owners through high-stakes personnel decisions. You love the human element of the practice.

  • Execution-Oriented: You hold high standards for yourself and your work product. You get a quiet satisfaction from crossing the T's, building out solid HR/legal frameworks, and delivering pristine results.

Compensation:

$150,000 - $250,000 DOE

Responsibilities:
  • Develop strategies and plans for employment and HR matters from start to finish.

  • Manage responses to demand letters, labor board disputes, government audits, and internal compliance audits.

  • Direct and oversee the work of other staff to ensure deadlines are met.

  • Maintain a focus on staying informed about current and upcoming laws.

  • Provide training and education to staff and clients.

  • Offer advice and guidance to small business owners.

  • Create educational resources for small business owners.

  • Execute projects within specified timelines.

  • Handle demand letters and negotiate settlements effectively.

  • Address government agency complaints and audits promptly.

  • Host workshops and training for clients.

Qualifications:
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience providing advice and counsel to California Employers regarding HR and California employment and labor laws is required.

  • Demonstrated commitment to advocating for small businesses is essential.

  • At least 5 years of customer service experience is mandatory.

  • Preferably, at least 1 year of experience working in a remote/virtual setting.

  • Preferably, at least 1 year of experience in supervising staff.

  • Previous experience working in a technology-dependent business environment is necessary.

  • Our ideal client has previously worked in an HR role at some point in their career. This is a unique quality of our firm and allows us to give practical, proactive advice that clients have come to rely on! THIS IS A REQUIREMENT.

About Company

Why You’ll Love It Here:

We believe in working hard for clients, but we also believe in taking care of our people. At The HR Law Firm, you’ll find a supportive team that respects your expertise, values your work-life balance, and cheers for your success.

Who We Are:

Remote work is not a fad for us-it is by design, and our management style reflects that.

Our pillars and commitments to clients:

Confidence: We aim to give CA Business Owners confidence to run their businesses the way they want to and fuel the life they desire, with peace of mind that they are protected from hire to fire.

Encouragement: Our goal is that by walking alongside them, our advice will provide the support they need to flourish.

Hope: By having the unwavering support of our firm, our goal is that they will have hope for their futures, their families, and their businesses.

We offer paid time off, holiday office closures, summer Fridays, and a wonderful team environment! Plus more!
