How does working as a Remote Hive engineer typically differ from on-site roles in terms of team collaboration and communication?

As a Remote Hive Engineer, much of your collaboration with data engineers, analysts, and other stakeholders happens virtually through tools like Slack, Zoom, and project management platforms. Clear and proactive communication is essential since you'll be coordinating across different time zones and may have less face-to-face interaction. Regular stand-ups, documentation, and asynchronous updates help ensure alignment within the team. You'll need to be self-motivated and comfortable working independently, but also ready to engage in collaborative problem-solving sessions when complex Hive queries or data issues arise.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Hive data engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Hive Data Engineer, you need a strong background in data engineering, SQL, and distributed computing, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Proficiency with Apache Hive, Hadoop, cloud platforms like AWS or Azure, and data pipeline tools is typically required, along with relevant certifications. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and time-management skills are essential for collaborating remotely and ensuring data integrity. These abilities are crucial for managing large-scale data sets efficiently and enabling data-driven decision making in distributed work environments.

Job description

About the role and team

Engineering at Uber means building for real-world impact under real-world constraints. As a Software Engineer II on our Data and Storage teams, you will architect the foundational infrastructure that powers business decisions and core services for millions of users. Whether you are scaling distributed storage platforms or building high-performance data pipelines, you will be solving complex challenges at the intersection of low latency, high correctness, and massive scale.

The problems here are messy and the systems are global. You'll need to make smart decisions with imperfect information, own your work end-to-end, and stay calm when high-load systems are on the line. We are looking for engineers who think in systems, pride themselves on robust monitoring, and believe that the best solutions are built through candid feedback and cross-functional collaboration. If you're energized by challenges and motivated to move the real world - this is where you'll grow.

Rate of Pay:                 $171,000 to $209,000 per year
You will be eligible to participate in Uber's bonus program, and may be offered other types of comp. You will also be eligible for various benefits. More details can be found at the following link https://www.uber.com/careers/benefits.
What you'll do

  • Design, build and deliver end-to-end features spanning across the AdTech tech stack.
  • Design, develop and operate highly scalable and reliable services.
  • Leverage your experience with large scale data using big data technologies such as Spark, Hive, Presto, Flink, to build scalable data pipelines that power various ad tech use cases.
  • Work in a cross-functional team along with Product Management, Data Science, and Marketing to experiment with new strategies and approaches to optimize ad spend and then build scalable production systems to productionize the winning strategies.
  • Collaborate across other engineering teams at Uber to leverage other Uber Internal tech stacks and systems like Michelangelo (ML), Bullseye (Audience Builder), Morpheus (Experimentation), Flow (Workflow Automation), Piper (Data orchestrator) etc. to build systems that leverage mature technologies at Uber and also influence the overall roadmap of these technologies.
  • Build tools and automation to eliminate manual processes and improve efficiency of our end users.
  • May telecommute.

Basic Qualifications

  • 3+ years of professional software engineering experience in backend development, distributed systems, or data engineering.
  • Proficiency in one or more object-oriented or functional programming languages (e.g., Go, Java, Python, or C++).
  • Experience with data modeling, query optimization, and translating customer problems into system design.
  • Bachelor's Degree (or equivalent experience) in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Experience writing tests to verify functionality and establishing monitoring systems to ensure code stability.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Employer will accept a Bachelor's degree Computer Science, Engineering (Any), Information Technology, Applied Mathematics, Physics, or related field and 3 years of experience in the job offered or in a related occupation.
  • Position requires:
    • C++, Python, Java, GIT, or SVN;
    • SQL or MySQL;
    • Data structures and algorithms development and functionality;
    • Designing technology stacks;
    • System Architecture and Data Modeling;
    • Debugging and monitoring for production services;
    • Distributed systems such as Hadoop, Hive, Spark, Presto, and Kafka;
    • Software Development Lifecycle;
    • Productionizing Machine Learning Models;
    • Real Time Data Systems;
    • Streaming Data Driven Production Systems;
    • Service Oriented Architecture.

Ready to Ride?

This isn't the kind of place where you follow a playbook - it's where you help write one. If you're driven by impact, energized by challenge, and ready to shape how the world moves - we'd love to hear from you.
