What is remote healthcare informatics?

Remote healthcare informatics is the field that focuses on managing and analyzing health information using technology, often from a remote or offsite location. Professionals in this area use electronic health records, telemedicine tools, and data analytics to improve patient care, streamline operations, and support clinical decision-making. This role is vital for connecting healthcare providers and patients virtually, ensuring data accuracy, security, and accessibility. Remote healthcare informatics specialists work closely with IT teams, clinicians, and administrators to optimize the use of health information systems.

What is a remote healthcare informatics job?

In a remote healthcare informatics job, you use software to organize, maintain, and pull useful information from medical records. In this role, you may conduct an analysis of illness trends and treatment results, answer questions for your client, or use online sources to add information to records. Some healthcare informatics jobs also focus on training or consulting—in these positions, you may instead teach people how to use healthcare informatics systems and make sure they know how to follow patient privacy regulations. While this remote job is usually done from home, it can also be done from a healthcare facility to coordinate with remote caregivers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote healthcare informatics specialist?

To thrive as a Remote Healthcare Informatics Specialist, you need a solid background in health information management, data analysis, and healthcare systems, typically supported by a relevant degree or certification such as RHIA or CAHIMS. Familiarity with electronic health records (EHRs), health information exchange (HIE) platforms, and data analytics tools like SQL or Tableau is important. Strong communication, problem-solving, and attention to detail are critical soft skills for translating clinical needs into technical solutions and collaborating with cross-functional teams. These abilities ensure the secure, accurate, and efficient management of healthcare data, supporting better patient outcomes and organizational efficiency.

How does a remote healthcare informatics specialist typically collaborate with clinical and IT teams?

Remote healthcare informatics specialists often bridge the gap between clinical staff and IT departments by facilitating virtual meetings, managing electronic health record (EHR) optimization projects, and translating clinical needs into technical solutions. They regularly use collaboration tools to communicate updates, gather requirements, and troubleshoot issues. Effective teamwork and clear communication are essential, as most interactions are virtual and require proactive engagement to ensure all stakeholders are aligned and informed.

Our team and what we'll accomplish together

Join TELUS Health Care Centres, a cutting-edge network of medical innovation and technology hubs across Canada. As part of our team, you'll contribute to delivering personalized care and enhanced patient experiences in state-of-the-art facilities. Our comprehensive range of services includes physiotherapy, genetics, nutrition counseling, mental health support, and more. This role offers you the unique opportunity to shape the future of healthcare by leveraging advanced technologies and collaborative practices. Be at the forefront of medical innovation while providing exceptional, patient-centered care in a dynamic and forward-thinking environment.

As a dermatologist, you will play a pivotal role in the early detection of melanoma and other skin cancers through expert review of high-resolution dermoscopic images. This position does not involve direct patient interaction or operation of imaging equipment. Instead, your core responsibility will be to assess mole mapping images and provide your impressions and recommendations to the treating practitioner.

Here's how you'll make a difference:

  • Review and interpret full-body mole mapping and dermoscopic images captured using advanced imaging technology.
  • Identify suspicious skin lesions and provide dermatologic reports.
  • Collaborate, if requested, with primary care providers and other healthcare professionals in a multidisciplinary, patient-centered model.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of image review protocols and optionally engage in education or research related to skin cancer screening.
  • Medical Director Coverage
  • Position structure: This role is structured as approximately 80-90% direct clinical work in mole mapping, with 10-20% dedicated to providing clinical oversight of the service at a national level.
  • Clinical oversight responsibilities: The successful candidate will support national clinical governance and oversight, ensuring consistency and quality across the service.
  • Ideal candidate: Suited to a physician looking to combine hands-on mole mapping clinical practice with a broader leadership/oversight role in the service.
  • Flexibility: Exact time allocation between clinical and oversight duties may be refined based on candidate experience and service needs.

What you bring:

  • Medical degree (MD or equivalent) with certification in Dermatology or Dermoscopy equivalent (PGDip).
  • Valid medical license in the province of practice
  • Demonstrated proficiency in dermoscopy techniques and interpretation
  • Experience or familiarity with mole mapping systems (e.g., FotoFinder, Vectra) is an asset.
  • Strong clinical judgment and attention to detail in image-based dermatologic assessment.
  • Ability to work independently and contribute effectively within a remote, collaborative medical team.
  • Demonstrated interest in digital dermatology and innovative medical technologies

What's in it for you:

  • Fully remote role with TELUS-provided equipment
  • Flexibility to review cases on your own schedule, part time, approximately 10 to 15 hours per week
  • Opportunity to work with advanced dermatology tools
  • Patients referred exclusively by healthcare practitioners with no direct patient care or follow-up required
  • Clear clinical boundaries: You are providing expert image-based assessments only; the referring practitioner maintains full responsibility for ongoing patient care
