Job description

Subject Matter Expert III (Senior Level) – Medical Coding & MHS GENESIS Coder Support

Reports To: Program Manager

Position Summary

Provides deep consultative expertise in medical coding, clinical documentation improvement, and MHS GENESIS coder support to enhance coding accuracy, compliance, and revenue cycle performance across the Military Health System.

Key Responsibilities

(Aligned to PWS 1.4.1, 5.1, 5.6)

  • Support MCPB responsibilities including policy/guidelines development, coder training, and MHS GENESIS coding workflows.
  • Analyze Outpatient Coder Editor (OCE) edits, APC/APG, and inpatient grouper logic; provide coder guidance and best practices.
  • Support refinement of provider query processes and documentation feedback mechanisms.
  • Research and update MHS Coding Guidelines and contribute to the Enterprise Coding Compliance Plan.
  • Identify coding performance improvement opportunities and compliance best practices.
Required Qualifications

Education Master's degree or Bachelor's + equivalent experience in Health Information Management or related field.

Certifications RHIA, CPC, or equivalent AAPC/AHIMA certification strongly preferred.

Experience 11–15+ years senior-level experience in medical coding, CDI, and revenue cycle in DoD/MHS environments.

Skills & Competencies Strong technical writing, briefing, and stakeholder engagement skills. Proficiency in MHS GENESIS coding modules and Microsoft 365.

Performance Expectations Deliver expert guidance with 95%+ first-submission accuracy; contribute to measurable improvements in coder performance and compliance.
