This internship opportunity is only available to graduate students currently enrolled at select APA Internal Internship Program academic partner institutions: Howard University, Montclair State University, or University of Virginia. About the Office & Position:

Communications

The Digital Content and Strategy Internship under the Communications Department is for listening to and engaging in public conversations about topics APA cares about. The team serves as APA staff’s point of contact for web content, advising on best practices, and ensuring web content is fresh, accurate and findable.

Key Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Develop an understanding of current best practices for audience engagement on our social media platforms: Instagram, Threads, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn, and increasing APA’s footprint on these channels.
  • Gain experience in proofreading social posts for consistency of APA style and correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
  • Identify trends in user engagement and learn about digital content and analytics tools.
  • Perform tasks such as monitoring social media user feedback through Sprout Social and engage with social media team on strategy for improved maintenance of channels.
  • Identify key influencers within the psychological community, including APA members, and build lists of key publics for specific social media campaigns.
  • Learn basic day-to-day social media procedures as well as web content duties.
  • Interns will generally be expected to work for a minimum of 10 hours (including approximately 1 hour of Internal Internship Programming) per week. Specific hour-to-academic credit ratios will be agreed upon between the intern’s university and the APA hiring team.

Expected Learning Objectives & Professional Advancement Opportunities:

  • Content Creation & Copywriting — Writing and editing content for various platforms (social media, web articles, newsletters, other digital campaigns), learning how to adapt tone, voice, and format for different audiences and channels.
  • Social Media Management — Hands-on experience scheduling posts, monitoring engagement, and understanding platform-specific best practices (Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, etc.), plus how to read analytics to refine strategy.
  • Data Analysis & Reporting — Using tools like Google Analytics, Meta Business Suite, or similar platforms to track performance metrics, draw insights, and translate data into actionable recommendations.
  • Content Strategy & Planning — Learning how to build content calendars, align content with organization goals, conduct audience research, and understand the broader picture.
  • SEO & Digital Marketing Fundamentals — Understanding keyword research, on-page optimization, and how mostly organic and specific paid strategies work together to drive traffic and conversions.

Required Qualifications:

  • Graduate Degree
  • We are currently only accepting applications only for interns who are (1) in graduate school [Master’s or PhD], (2) able to receive academic credit from their school for their internship; (3) able to commit to a full year [September 2026-May 2027]; and (4) living/working in an APA-approved state (Internships at APA).
  • Enrollment at an APA Internal Internship Program academic partner institution (Howard University, Montclair State University, or University of Virginia) is required.
