Job description

Summary
This position is located in the Golf Course Operations Branch of the MWR Department, Naval Submarine Base New London at Goose Run Golf Course. The purpose of this position is to provide the technical expertise to design and implement a maintenance program for the Golf Course. The incumbent is responsible for maintaining a 25 acre, 9 hole course which includes greens, tees, fairways, roughs, sand traps, practice areas, picnic areas, irrigation system and related buildings and equipment.

Major Duties and Responsibilities
a. The incumbent ensures the attractiveness and constant readiness of play for the course. Regularly inspects and evaluates the condition of the course to identify daily maintenance requirements and analyzes specific problems. Incumbent determines the appropriate genus of grass to be cultivated, based on nature and condition of soil, climatic conditions, and season of the year. Ensures the proper functioning of the irrigation system and determines the correct amount of water to be applied on greens, tees, athletic fields, fairways, grounds, ornamentals, parks and club house lawns under various climatic conditions. Directs the amount and types of soil nutriments and fertilizers to be applied, taking soil samples and deciphering results for necessary amendments.
b. Incumbent is responsible for the selection, application, storage and otherwise safe handling of the Integrated Pest management (IPM) program, and other toxic substances used in conjunction with maintenance of the golf course. Takes preventative measures to protect course from damage by small animals. Inspects for turf damage by fungus and insects, and applies fungicides or pesticides to correct problems. Calibrates sprayers and sprinklers so that the correct amount of material will be applied to the designed areas. The incumbent must be certified by DoD for the handling and application of pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers and fungicides.
c. Incumbent carries out plans for the maintenance of improved and unimproved grounds with respect to fertilization, weed, fungus, insect control, disease control, irrigation, mowing, pruning, etc.
d. Incumbent conducts studies to determine the optimum (effect/economic) fertilization program. Conducts analyses of soil for purposes of nutritional requirements. Develops and carries out plans for fertilization and watering.
e. Recommends annual budget estimates for course maintenance within established limitations, and submits to the MWR Director for approval. Recommends all materials, new equipment, and maintenance of items on hand for approval by the manager. Ensures that vehicle/equipment maintenance and preventative maintenance schedules are established and adhered to.
f. Supervises 1 regular full time NA-10 Mechanic and 3 seasonal NA-6 groundskeepers, as well as any other personnel assigned or detailed to golf course maintenance for special projects. Supervised personnel are involved in the operation and maintenance of machinery, mowing equipment and the fertilizing, spraying and irrigation of the golf course.
g. Prepares work schedules, quality and quantity standards. Acts on personnel problems; recommends appropriate action in such matters as awards, discipline, reassignment, etc. Approves leave; evaluates performance; recommends revisions to position descriptions. Practices and promotes management improvement techniques and work simplification, cost reduction, and safety.

  • Will work inside and outside subject to extreme temptures.
  • Must be a certified pest control applicator.
  • Requires some physical exertion such as long periods of standing when overseeing maintenance activities, walking over rough, uneven surfaces.

Qualifications
Resumes must include information which demonstrates experience and knowledge, skills, and ability (KSAs) as they relate to this position. Applicants are encouraged to be clear and specific when describing their experience level and KSAs.
A qualified candidate must possess:
  • Required to have a broad background in Golf Course maintenance and operations, having experience and knowledge of established agronomic practices either attained through academic achievements or practical experience.
  • Required to have knowledge of various types of pests and pesticides required for treatment and be certifiable in herbicide application.
  • Experience in determining the method of operation and analysis of complex problems and interpretations of procedures.
  • Required to have a working knowledge of and professional expertise in Golf Course equipment.
  • Required to have knowledge and understanding of the rules of golf along with the ability to view golf course from the perspective of the patron.
  • Must possess ability to lead and supervise employees.
    A Valid state driver's license current CPR/First Aid Certificate, and State and Federal pesticide mixing licenses are required.
