What is a remote GIS developer?

Remote GIS Developers are professionals who use Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to design, develop, and maintain spatial data applications while working from a location outside of a traditional office. They create maps, analyze geospatial data, and build tools or platforms that help organizations make location-based decisions. These developers often collaborate with teams using online communication tools and may work for industries such as urban planning, environmental science, or logistics. Their technical skills typically include programming languages like Python or JavaScript, as well as experience with GIS software such as ArcGIS or QGIS.

What does a remote GIS developer do?

As a remote GIS developer, your job is to analyze, design, program, and document software that uses a geographic information system. These systems are often used for virtual cartography, spatial and geospatial business planning, and other needs that involve managing or expanding into currently unoccupied areas. Many details of this telecommute job vary based on the employer's needs. Some remote GIS developers work with government agencies to create and manage utility systems while others focus on determining the most efficient route to build a road connecting to a particular destination. Remote GIS developers may use existing data sets or help collect new information.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote GIS developer?

To thrive as a Remote GIS Developer, you need strong programming skills (such as Python or JavaScript), experience with spatial databases, and a background in geography or geospatial sciences. Familiarity with GIS platforms like Esri ArcGIS, QGIS, remote sensing tools, and APIs, as well as certifications such as Esri Technical Certification, are often required. Effective problem-solving, self-motivation, and clear communication are essential soft skills for collaborating across distributed teams and managing independent tasks. These skills ensure accurate geospatial solutions, seamless integration with client systems, and successful project delivery in a remote environment.

What are some common challenges remote GIS developers face and how can they effectively collaborate with geographically dispersed teams?

Remote GIS Developers often encounter challenges such as coordinating across time zones, ensuring data consistency, and maintaining clear communication with team members who may have different technical backgrounds. Effective collaboration typically involves using version control systems, project management tools, and regular virtual meetings to discuss progress and address issues. Leveraging cloud-based GIS platforms and clear documentation practices also helps streamline workflows and minimize misunderstandings, enabling remote teams to work efficiently and cohesively.

  • As a Senior Full Stack Software Developer you will play a key role in architecting and delivering end-to-end web solutions across the full technology stack, from intuitive Next.js front ends to robust ASP.NET Core back-end services and APIs. You will work closely with cross-functional teams to translate business and customer needs into clean, maintainable, and performant code.
  • The ideal candidate is a versatile engineer who is equally comfortable crafting modern React/Next.js user interfaces and building secure, scalable .NET back-end services, and who brings strong software design fundamentals, cloud experience, and a passion for high-quality, well-tested code.

The responsibilities of this role include, but are not limited to:
  • Plan, develop, and maintain scalable full stack web applications using Next.js/React on the front end and .NET/ASP.NET Core (C#) on the back end.
  • Build responsive, accessible, and performant user interfaces that deliver an exceptional digital experience across devices.
  • Develop, document, and maintain secure RESTful and/or GraphQL APIs and microservices.
  • Design and optimize relational and/or NoSQL data models and queries (e.g., SQL Server, PostgreSQL, Cosmos DB).
  • Implement server-side rendering, static generation, and caching strategies in Next.js to maximize performance and SEO.
  • Integrate front-end applications with back-end services, third-party APIs, and content management systems.
  • Write clean, testable, and well-documented code, supported by unit, integration, and end-to-end tests.
  • Participate in architecture and design discussions, contributing to technical decisions and standards.
  • Deploy and monitor applications in cloud environments (Azure preferred) using CI/CD pipelines.
  • Collaborate with UX/UI designers to translate wireframes and prototypes into polished, pixel-accurate interfaces.
  • Partner with Product, QA, and DevOps to plan, estimate, and deliver features in an Agile environment.
  • Conduct and participate in code reviews to uphold code quality, security, and performance standards.
  • Troubleshoot, debug, and resolve production issues, identifying root causes and implementing durable fixes.
  • Optimize application performance, scalability, and reliability across the stack.
  • Mentor junior developers and share best practices in modern full stack development.
  • Stay current with emerging front-end, back-end, and cloud technologies and recommend improvements.

  • 5+ years of professional full stack software development experience building and shipping production web applications.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Strong front-end expertise with React and Next.js, including modern JavaScript/TypeScript, HTML5, and CSS.
  • Strong back-end expertise with .NET/ASP.NET Core, including RESTful API design and development.
  • Solid experience with relational and/or NoSQL databases (e.g., SQL Server, PostgreSQL, Cosmos DB) and ORMs such as Entity Framework.
  • Experience with cloud platforms (Microsoft Azure preferred) and CI/CD pipelines (Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions, or similar).
  • Proficiency with version control (Git) and modern software engineering practices, including automated testing.
  • Understanding of web security, authentication and authorization (e.g., OAuth, OpenID Connect), and performance optimization.
  • Familiarity with Agile/Scrum development methodologies.
  • Strong problem-solving, debugging, and analytical skills.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration abilities.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
Certifications:

  • Bachelor's degree
Nice to have:

  • Microsoft Azure certification (e.g., Azure Developer Associate).
  • Experience with headless CMS platforms, preferably Sitecore (XM Cloud) or similar.
  • Experience with containerization (Docker) and orchestration (Kubernetes).
