Senior Platform Engineer - Performance

Weave

Lehi, UT โ€ข On-site, Remote

Full-time

Re-posted 12 days ago

Job description

As Weave continues to grow, so do the performance and scalability challenges of supporting a rapidly expanding distributed platform. With hundreds of microservices powering communication and payments for thousands of healthcare practices, ensuring our platform remains fast, reliable, and scalable is more important than ever.
We're looking for an experienced Platform Engineer specializing in Performance Engineering to help define how Weave approaches performance at scale.
This isn't a traditional performance testing role where you'll spend your day executing load tests. Instead, you'll combine deep performance engineering expertise with a platform engineering mindset to build the tools, frameworks, and developer experiences that enable every engineering team to confidently understand, validate, and improve the performance of the systems they build.
You'll partner closely with product and infrastructure teams to solve some of Weave's most complex scalability challenges while creating a self-service performance engineering platform that becomes a foundational part of our software development lifecycle.
If you are a software engineer with a passion for performance, a talent for building developer-centric tools, and a drive to solve complex systems-level challenges, we want to hear from you.
  • This position will be available fully remote in the US
  • Reports to: Engineering Manager

What You Will Own
  • Build Weave's Performance Engineering Platform
    • Design and build a self-service platform that enables engineering teams to easily execute, analyze, and understand performance testing for their services.
    • Develop reusable APIs, frameworks, libraries, and tooling that abstract the complexity of performance engineering and integrate seamlessly into the developer workflow.
    • Integrate performance engineering capabilities into CI/CD pipelines to make performance validation a natural part of software delivery.
  • Solve Complex Performance Challenges
    • Partner with engineering teams to identify, reproduce, and solve difficult performance and scalability problems across distributed systems.
    • Define performance strategies for critical services, including load, stress, spike, endurance, and scalability testing.
    • Help engineering teams understand system bottlenecks, capacity limits, latency tradeoffs, and scaling behavior before issues reach production.
  • Improve Engineering Productivity
    • Build developer-centric tooling that makes performance testing accessible without requiring every engineer to become a performance expert.
    • Create reference implementations, documentation, and best practices that establish a consistent approach to performance engineering across Weave.
    • Coach engineering teams on performance methodologies and help foster a culture where performance is considered throughout the development lifecycle.
  • Drive Reliability at Scale
    • Partner with infrastructure and product teams to define and validate Service Level Objectives (SLOs) for critical systems.
    • Build tooling that proactively detects performance regressions and helps engineering teams prevent customer-impacting incidents before they occur.
    • Help evolve Weave's performance engineering strategy as our platform and customer base continue to grow.

What You Will Need to Accomplish the Job
  • Experience: 5+ years (for Senior level) of professional experience in roles such as Performance Engineer, Software Engineer in Test, SRE, DevOps, or Software Engineer with a deep focus on the performance, scalability, and reliability of large-scale distributed systems.
  • Programming Proficiency: Strong software development skills and significant hands-on experience building, testing, and maintaining complex applications or infrastructure using Go and/or Python. Proficiency in Go is highly desired to align with our primary backend language and to contribute effectively to our microservices ecosystem.
  • Kubernetes Expertise: Deep, hands-on expertise with Kubernetes concepts, architecture, and workflows is required. This includes experience deploying and managing containerized applications, as well as understanding the nuances of performance tuning within a Kubernetes environment.
  • CI/CD Mastery: Proven ability to design, implement, and optimize complex CI/CD pipelines to integrate automated testing, including performance testing. Experience with tools like GitLab CI, GitHub Actions, or similar is essential.
  • Performance Testing Expertise: Expert-level understanding of performance testing methodologies, including load, stress, spike, endurance, and scalability testing. Demonstrable experience designing and implementing test strategies for complex microservice architectures, including identifying appropriate metrics and acceptance criteria.
  • Systems Thinking Acumen: Exceptional analytical, debugging, and problem-solving skills with a proven ability to diagnose and solve complex, cross-service performance issues in distributed systems. You don't just find bottlenecks; you understand the systemic reasons they occur and can articulate the broader architectural implications.
  • Collaboration and Communication: Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) with the ability to articulate complex technical ideas clearly and effectively to diverse audiences, including engineers, product managers, and leadership.

What Will Make Us Love You
  • Modern Tooling Experience: Hands-on experience with modern, script-as-code performance testing tools, particularly k6 (preferred) or Locust. Experience building custom tooling, libraries, or frameworks around these tools to enhance developer experience is a significant plus. This demonstrates an alignment with our "test-as-code" and developer-enablement philosophy.
  • Observability Expertise: Proficiency with modern observability stacks (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog, ELK) and extensive experience using metrics, distributed traces, and logs to correlate application performance with underlying system behavior during performance tests.
  • Chaos Engineering Experience: Either direct involvement building or using chaos engineering tooling in a microservices environment.
  • Go-Specific Performance Skills: Experience with Go-specific profiling and debugging tools (e.g., pprof). Familiarity with the xk6-g0 extension for writing k6 tests directly in Go would also be a plus, as it represents a unique and powerful intersection of the exact skills required for this role: deep Go expertise combined with a modern approach to performance engineering.
  • Internal Platform Development: A proven track record of building internal developer tools, platforms, or frameworks that have measurably improved engineering productivity, velocity, and software quality within an organization.
  • Weave Tech Stack Familiarity: Direct experience testing Go-based microservices environments and systems utilizing Kafka, NSQ, Postgres, and/or gRPC.
