Remote Food Product Development information

What is remote food product development?

Remote food product development is the process of creating, testing, and refining new food products or recipes while working from a location outside of a traditional lab or office, often from home. Professionals in this role use digital collaboration tools to communicate with team members, conduct virtual tastings, and coordinate with manufacturers or suppliers. This approach enables companies to innovate and bring new products to market efficiently, even when teams are geographically dispersed. Remote food product developers must have strong communication skills and expertise in food science, nutrition, and culinary trends to succeed in this environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in remote food product development?

To thrive in Remote Food Product Development, you need a strong background in food science, product formulation, and regulatory compliance, often supported by a degree in food science or a related field. Familiarity with formulation software, project management tools, and knowledge of food safety standards such as HACCP is essential. Creativity, effective communication, and strong problem-solving skills help you collaborate remotely with cross-functional teams and innovate new products. These skills are crucial for developing safe, appealing, and compliant food products efficiently in a virtual work environment.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in remote food product development roles?

One of the main challenges in remote food product development is effective collaboration with cross-functional teams, such as R&D, marketing, and quality assurance, especially when working across different time zones. Additionally, the inability to access on-site labs or kitchens can make hands-on testing and sensory evaluations more difficult, often requiring creative solutions or coordination with local partners. Keeping communication clear and maintaining project momentum remotely also requires strong organizational and digital communication skills. However, many companies provide virtual tools, scheduled sample shipments, and regular video meetings to support remote team members.

Job description

Optum is a global organization that delivers care, aided by technology to help millions of people live healthier lives. The work you do with our team will directly improve health outcomes by connecting people with the care, pharmacy benefits, data and resources they need to feel their best. Here, you will find a culture guided by inclusion, talented peers, comprehensive benefits and career development opportunities. Come make an impact on the communities we serve as you help us advance health optimization on a global scale. Join us to start Caring. Connecting. Growing together.

The Senior Product Manager is a strategic product leader responsible for defining and executing the product strategy for one of Optum Payment Integrity's Professional Claim Review products. These are established, widely adopted products operating at significant scale - which means the innovation you drive reaches the market fast and shows up in real client and financial outcomes, not someday but now.

Optum Payment Integrity helps health plans and healthcare organizations ensure claims are paid accurately and fairly, reducing unnecessary medical spend across the full claim lifecycle through a combination of advanced analytics, AI, and deep healthcare reimbursement expertise. You will own the product vision, roadmap, and performance ensuring the product delivers measurable client value, scales effectively, and remains differentiated in the market.

Why this role

  • Own a product that's already winning - and take it further. You're not starting from zero. You'll inherit a proven, in-market product with a strong client base and clear runway to scale new value quickly.

  • Build at the intersection of healthcare reimbursement and applied AI. You'll partner daily with AI/ML, analytics, and data science teams to turn some of healthcare's most complex reimbursement problems into intelligent, data-driven solutions.

  • Real influence, real visibility. You'll set strategy, drive execution, and shape decisions alongside senior leaders across product, engineering, and go-to-market - with your impact measured in client outcomes and business growth.

This is a high-impact role for a strategic product leader who thrives at the intersection of data, technology, and market opportunity, and who is equally adept at setting vision and driving execution.

You'll enjoy the flexibility to work remotely * from anywhere within the U.S. as you take on some tough challenges.

For all hires in the Minneapolis or Washington, D.C. area, you will be required to work in the office a minimum of four days per week.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Define the Market Vision and Product Strategy
    • Craft and champion a clear product vision and multi-year product strategy-
    • Translate market needs, payer feedback, professional reimbursement changes, and competitive intelligence into actionable product direction-
    • Align product investments to deliver customer value, revenue  growth, and market differentiation-
    • Partner with other Product Managers in the portfolio to ensure product decisions support both scalability and client success-
  • Lead Product Development and Execution
    • Translate strategy into actionable roadmaps, well-defined requirements, and prioritized outcomes-
    • Collaborate with engineering, AI/ML, analytics, and operations to deliver data-driven solutions that improve accuracy, efficiency, and user experience-
    • Drive prioritization, balancing innovation, technical debt reduction, and operational scalability-
    • Ensure product launches are timely, high-quality, and aligned to go-to-market goals-
  • Measure and Optimize Product Performance
    • Define and monitor KPIs tied to adoption, financial performance, and client outcomes-
    • Partner with analytics and finance teams to evaluate product ROI and inform future investments-
    • Use data and user feedback to continuously refine strategy, features, and market positioning-
  • Collaborate to Drive Market Growth
    • Partner with go-to-market, sales, and marketing teams to drive product adoption and expansion across payer clients-
    • Support pricing, packaging, and positioning in collaboration with the Director of Product and GTM leadership-
    • Identify and scale client-proven innovations to the broader market-
  • Stay Ahead of Market and Industry Trends
    • Monitor market, regulatory, and competitive shifts to identify emerging opportunities and risks-
    • Translate evolving market dynamics into forward-looking roadmap updates-

At Optum, product leaders are builders and connectors - translating complex healthcare challenges into scalable, data-driven solutions that improve affordability and trust in the healthcare system. You will collaborate closely with other Product Managers and cross-functional teams to advance a unified roadmap and shared vision for building AI-powered solutions that transform healthcare payment integrity.

If you thrive on turning insight into impact and working across teams to drive innovation, you'll find your next challenge here.

You'll be rewarded and recognized for your performance in an environment that will challenge you and give you clear direction on what it takes to succeed in your role as well as provide development for other roles you may be interested in.

Required Qualifications:

  • 7 years of experience in product management, product strategy, and/or business transformation
  • 5 years of experience in professional claims within payment integrity
  • Experience leading cross-functional teams and influence senior stakeholders to align priorities and execute strategic initiatives
  • Experience with professional and behavioral health reimbursement methodologies - including CPT/HCPCS and E/M coding; NCCI edits; physician fee schedules (RBRVS); and Behavioral Health-specific payment models, levels of care, and parity requirements
  • Own product strategy, roadmap, and end-to-end delivery of complex healthcare products or initiatives that improve reimbursement accuracy, coding integrity, provider compliance, with measurable client and business outcomes
  • Demonstrated ability to work with data science teams to define model objectives, evaluate performance, interpret outputs, and translate findings into actionable product features, workflows, and business outcomes
  • Demonstrated ability to partner with engineering, AI/ML, and data science teams to deliver innovative, data-driven capabilities
  • Demonstrated success modernizing, repositioning, or transforming an established product through changing market conditions, emerging technologies, or evolving customer needs

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience leading or mentoring other product professionals, or partnering closely with engineering leaders to deliver outcomes (not just outputs)
  • Experience in U.S. healthcare payment integrity, professional claims, coding validation, reimbursement policy, provider billing, or provider revenue cycle, with a strong understanding of the factors that drive claim payment accuracy, reimbursement outcomes, and provider billing behavior
  • Working knowledge of Optum and/or UnitedHealth Group
