Remote Graphic Designers have a broader scope, working on visual content across various media. While both roles often work remotely and share design credentials, their focus areas differ significantly, making this comparison useful for those exploring careers or hiring in the design industry.

How do Remote Font Designers typically collaborate with type foundries and clients throughout a project?

Remote Font Designers often work closely with type foundries and clients through regular virtual meetings, design feedback sessions, and collaborative tools like file sharing platforms and version control systems. Clear communication is key, as designers must interpret briefs, present drafts, and incorporate feedback efficiently while working from different locations. Most projects involve iterative development, so designers frequently share progress updates and adjust their work based on stakeholder input, ensuring that the final font meets both aesthetic and technical requirements.

What does a remote font designer do?

A remote font designer specializes in creating, refining, and optimizing typefaces for digital and print use, all while working from a remote location. Their responsibilities include conceptualizing letterforms, developing font families, ensuring readability, and sometimes collaborating with clients or teams online. They use specialized software to design vector-based fonts and may also handle tasks like font licensing or technical troubleshooting. Communication and self-management skills are important since they work independently or as part of distributed teams.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Font Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Font Designer, you need expertise in typography, graphic design, and digital illustration, often supported by formal training in design or related fields. Proficiency in industry-standard tools like Adobe Illustrator, Glyphs, and FontLab is essential for creating and refining font files. Strong attention to detail, creativity, and effective communication skills help you interpret client briefs and collaborate remotely. These skills are vital for producing high-quality, functional typefaces that meet diverse client needs in a competitive, digital-first market.

Parsons is looking for a talented Bridge Detailer to join our team full-time to support one of the many large transformative transportation projects that we have either won, are currently pursuing, or will pursue across the nation.
Some of the larger projects are located in the states of:

In this role, you will help deliver the design for projects that have a construction value greater than $1 billion, and in turn assist in enhancing the mobility, safety, and reliability for communities who live along and travel through these critical corridors.
This position is remote, and the selected candidate will have flexibility in work location while still supporting virtual collaboration with Parsons teams.
Parsons is one of the premier design-build firms in the country with over 16,000 employees worldwide and nearly $7 Billion in revenue. Most recently, we have been the engineer of record or have assisted on some of the most challenging projects in the country, including:
  • the Gordie Howe Bridge near Detroit, MI

  • Brent Spence project in Cincinnati, OH
  • the SR 400 project in Atlanta, GA

These high-visibility Design-Build and Public Private Partnership "P3" projects and many others are career defining opportunities and offer complex, challenging work for our entire professional staff and new hires, who work seamlessly together from offices across the country.
What You'll Be Doing:
  • Prepare detailed 2D engineering drawings for bridge superstructures (deck, girders, crossframes, etc), and substructures (abutments, piers and wingwall/retaining walls)
  • Detail standard bridge accessories, including expansion joints, bearings, drainage scuppers, railings, and barriers
  • Develop precise reinforcing steel (rebar) layouts, including bar marks, spacing, clearance details, and bending schedules
  • Maintain strict adherence to workspace configurations and file structures while also adhering to the CAD detailing requirements of state DOTs or clients (levels, line styles, line weights, and font/dimension styles)
  • Compute dimensions, slopes, elevations, and stationing using basic geometry and trigonometry to ensure plan accuracy
  • Review completed drawing sheets against the engineer's sketches and calculation packages to eliminate errors before detail check is performed
  • Perform quantity calculations

What Required Skills You'll Bring:
  • 4 to 10+ years of related work experience
  • Proficiency in industry-standard software, specifically Bentley MicroStation (preferred) or Autodesk AutoCAD
  • Ability to convert structural engineering designs into detailed, accurate, and buildable construction drawings
  • Ability to calculate complex bridge geometries, including curves, variable superelevations, and highly skewed alignments
  • Knowledge of reinforcing steel layout rules, concrete cover requirements, bar development lengths, and complex bending schedules
  • Ability to perform accurate structural calculations for concrete volumes, weights of steel, and surface areas of coatings
  • Familiarity with individual state Department of Transportation (DOT) CAD standards, cell libraries, and delivery protocols

What Desired Skills You'll Bring:
  • Strong skills in training and mentoring entry-level CAD technicians and junior bridge detailers
  • CAD (Computer-Aided Design) degree
  • 3D Modeling & BIM capabilities
