SUMMARY OF POSITION:
The Penn State Health Hershey Medical Center Pediatric Inpatient Acute Care Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Fellowship is a post-graduate training program designed to prepare nurse practitioners and physician assistants to become skilled and confident providers in acute pediatric care. This structured fellowship supports the transition from graduate education to independent clinical practice through immersive clinical experiences and comprehensive didactic training.
This fellowship is intended for graduates of accredited PA programs or CRNP programs with acute care certification who are interested in hospital-based, emergent, urgent, and inpatient pediatric care. Fellows will gain broad exposure to acute surgical and non-surgical pediatric conditions across a variety of inpatient and outpatient settings.
The program emphasizes development of advanced clinical skills, procedural competency, critical thinking, evidence-based practice, and multidisciplinary collaboration. Fellows will participate in resident and fellow didactic sessions, quality improvement education, and leadership development opportunities, including the TLC program.
Upon completion of the fellowship, graduates will be well-prepared to practice in academic or community settings providing acute pediatric care.
Position Details:
- Rotations include inpatient, outpatient, and surgical services (no OR time)
- Scheduled shifts vary by rotation and may include evenings, weekends, call, and occasional overnight shifts
- Exposure to a variety of pediatric acute care settings, procedures, and patient acuity levels
- Opportunity to work alongside multidisciplinary teams across multiple pediatric specialties
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Graduate of an approved Physician Assistant or Pediatric Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Program
- National board certification required for both NPs and PAs prior to the start of the fellowship program.
- Current BLS Certification
- Current PALS Certification
- Ability to dedicate up to 50 hours a week to fellowship training. Hours may be divided between clinical rotation, reading, completing online training modules, didactic sessions, case conferences, journal clubs, and clinical simulation.
- Trainees will be expected to work the schedule that is outlined by their clinical mentors.
- A personal narrative describing your professional goals and interest in Pediatric Inpatient Acute Care (Double-spaced, 12 font, max 3 pages).
- A resume/CV, including a description of pediatric experience, including clinical rotations, if any.
- Three letters of recommendation, one from a current program director or clinical faculty. If more than two years since graduation, one from a recent supervising physician or APP colleague.
