Job description

Job Description Would you like to start a career as a project manager. This is a great opportunity to get into a field with a ton of advancement potential as a Transportation Planner 1. You'll work with a team of experienced project managers, learning the steps in delivering a highway project, how projects are funded, and using a variety of software products for scheduling, GIS, and financial tracking.

This is a Trainee / Journey position, so after 3 years of successfully learning the skills as a Transportation Planner 1, we expect the successful candidate to be upgraded to a Transportation Planner 2. The Project Management Bureau is a great place to share ideas and find mentors. We look forward to meeting you.

Location: The job is located in our DOT headquarters at 800 Lincoln Way, Ames, Iowa. Telecommuting options may be considered after an initial training period. Shift Requirements: Full-time (40 hours/week), Monday-Friday.

Flex hours allowed with Supervisor approval. Some travel will be required to meet with the public and local, state, and federal agency staff for pre-construction meetings, final audit reviews, and on other occasions as needed. Summary of Job Duties: Manage the delivery of small or medium projects from initiation to construction letting.

The project could include bridge replacements or repairs, and roadway construction or repair on state highway or institutional roads. Assist senior project managers on large projects. This could include updating schedules, preparing project updates or reports, completing cost estimates, and preparing meeting minutes.

This person will provide continuity and backup if the senior project manager is absent. Negotiate contracts for engineering services and assist in the documentation and reporting of engineering expenses. Lead meetings and facilitate conversations to track holistic schedule and cost performance for the DOT highway projects.
