Remote Finance Startup information

What is a remote finance startup?

A remote finance startup is a newly established company in the finance sector that operates primarily or entirely online, allowing its employees to work from any location rather than a centralized office. These startups typically offer financial services or products such as digital banking, payment processing, investment platforms, or financial planning tools. By leveraging remote work, they can access a broader talent pool, reduce overhead costs, and often provide more flexible services to customers. Remote finance startups use technology to streamline operations and enhance customer experiences in the financial industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a remote finance startup, and why are they important?

To thrive in a remote finance startup, you need a solid understanding of financial principles, accounting, and business operations, often supported by a degree in finance, accounting, or a related field. Familiarity with cloud-based financial tools like QuickBooks, Xero, or Excel, as well as experience with startups' financial management systems, is highly valuable. Strong self-motivation, communication skills, and adaptability are critical for collaborating with distributed teams and navigating the fast-changing startup environment. These competencies ensure effective financial management, seamless remote collaboration, and agile responses to evolving business needs.

What are some common challenges faced when working at a remote finance startup, and how can new hires prepare for them?

Working at a remote finance startup often means adapting to a fast-paced, rapidly changing environment where processes are still being built. New hires may face challenges such as managing time across different time zones, communicating effectively with team members virtually, and prioritizing tasks in a less structured setting. To succeed, it's important to be proactive in communication, comfortable with digital collaboration tools, and adaptable to shifting priorities. Embracing a self-starter mindset and seeking regular feedback can help you integrate quickly and make impactful contributions.

Job description

About the Role

As a highly distributed team, our culture, our recognition, and our sense of being one team don't happen by default - they take varied, intentional work to build. That's what this role exists to own: every internal event we run, from the company-wide offsite to team offsites, recurring virtual gatherings, and all the moments in between that make remote and hybrid work feel connected.

We're looking for a full-time internal Events and Remote Experience Manager to own this end to end, including our rewards and recognition programs, so employees feel seen and celebrated no matter where they sit. You'll own the planning and execution and be the one who makes sure it comes together seamlessly, acting as the architect of our internal culture calendar and partnering closely with People, Finance, and team leads to deliver experiences that are well-run, on budget, and genuinely valued. You'll also own our coworking and physical space relationships - making sure the spaces where our team gathers, in person or shared, actually work for how we operate.

We're a high-growth startup, so there's no existing playbook handed to you. You'll build the processes as you go, and they'll need to flex as the company changes shape under you. If you care about getting the details right, can hold a budget and a vendor relationship at the same time, and want to see a direct line between your work and how it feels to work here, we want to hear from you.

Key Responsibilities
  • Planning and running the company-wide offsite - venue, logistics, budget, agenda, and the on-site execution itself.
  • Planning team-level events and offsites with team leads, balancing what each team wants against overall budget and timeline.
  • Running a regular cadence of virtual events that actually keep a distributed team feeling like one team.
  • Managing relationships with coworking providers and physical space vendors, including renewals, capacity planning, and day-to-day issues as they come up.
  • Acting as the point person for in-office or coworking space needs - desk capacity, meeting room access, badge/access logistics - so teams can just show up and work.
  • Evaluating and recommending new coworking locations as the team grows or shifts geographically.
  • Owning rewards and recognition end to end, from the platform itself to nominations and the moments that make people feel seen.
  • Improving the remote and hybrid experience generally - swag, onboarding touches, the small rituals that matter when you rarely see the office.
  • Sourcing, negotiating with, and managing vendors: venues, caterers, travel, AV, swag, event platforms.
  • Owning event budgets from the forecast through reconciliation, and flagging variances before they become a problem.
  • Handling the full logistics chain - invites, RSVPs, travel, run-of-show docs, day-of execution, wrap-up - so nothing falls through the cracks.
  • Collecting feedback after every event and actually using it to make the next one better.
  • Traveling as needed to support offsites and in-person events (roughly 10-25% of the time).
What We Are Looking For
  • 7+ years running events at a high-growth tech company as the primary owner (not supporting)
  • A track record of planning and executing in-person, virtual, and hybrid events, including multi-day offsites from 10-450+ humans
  • Experience managing a physical workspace or coworking relationship - lease terms, vendor SLAs, or day-to-day space operations
  • Experience negotiating and managing vendor relationships, and knowing what good looks like before you sign
  • Strong budget management skills - forecasting, tracking spend, and staying inside the number you committed to
  • Strong organizational instincts and the ability to run several events and programs at once without dropping a thread
  • A level head when something goes wrong on-site, because something always does
  • Clear written & verbal communication and presentation skills - you'll be coordinating across teams and levels constantly, as be the face of our events.
  • Willingness and ability to travel roughly 10-25% of the time
  • SF Bay Area in-office time required #LI-Hybrid
Nice to Have
  • Familiarity with workplace/facilities platforms (Envoy, Robin, OfficeSpace, or similar) for space and access management
  • Experience running a rewards and recognition program or platform (Bonusly, Nectar, Motivosity, or similar)
  • Comfortable with tools like Asana, Notion, or Airtable for keeping events organized
  • Experience designing programs specifically for a distributed or fully-remote team
  • A background in hospitality, production, or venue operations
  • An eye for photography or video, useful for capturing events as they happen
  • Experience measuring whether an event or program actually worked - surveys, attendance data, that kind of thing

Tailscale's compensation package includes base salary, equity, and comprehensive benefits. The salary range displayed on each job posting represents the target range for a new hire's base salary.
