Remote Field Engineer information

What is a remote field engineer?

A Remote Field Engineer is a technical professional who provides engineering support, troubleshooting, and maintenance for equipment or systems, often from a remote location rather than on-site. They use digital tools and communication technologies to diagnose issues, guide repairs, and ensure the smooth operation of machinery or infrastructure. Remote Field Engineers can work in various industries, such as telecommunications, energy, or IT, and may occasionally travel to client sites if necessary. Their role helps minimize downtime and supports clients or teams in locations where specialized technical expertise is needed but not always physically present.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote field engineer?

To thrive as a Remote Field Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering principles, troubleshooting, and system installation, often supported by a relevant engineering degree or certification. Familiarity with remote diagnostic tools, field service management software, and industry-specific equipment is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, effective communication, and self-motivation are essential soft skills for working independently and supporting clients from a distance. These abilities are crucial for delivering timely technical solutions, maintaining customer satisfaction, and ensuring operational efficiency in remote environments.

How does a remote field engineer effectively coordinate with on-site teams and clients while working off-site?

As a Remote Field Engineer, clear communication is essential since you are not physically present on the job site. Most companies rely on video conferencing, project management tools, and real-time reporting platforms to keep remote engineers in the loop. You'll often schedule regular check-ins with on-site teams, review digital documentation, and provide technical guidance remotely. Building strong relationships with both on-site staff and clients helps ensure issues are addressed quickly and projects stay on track. Being proactive and responsive to messages or calls is key to maintaining trust and efficiency in this remote collaboration model.

Job description

Senior Field Application Engineer

Senior Field Application Engineer

Location: Remote with local travel - Austin, TX

Compensation: $130K-$170K (DOE)
Position Overview
We are seeking a Senior Field Applications Engineer (FAE) to serve as the primary technical interface between our customers and internal engineering teams. This role is ideal for an engineer who enjoys building relationships, influencing technical decisions, and driving new business opportunities through engineering expertise.

This is not a traditional sales position-it's an engineering-first role with a strong commercial focus. The successful candidate will work alongside Sales, Product Management, and Engineering to identify customer needs, develop technical solutions, support new product introductions, and drive design wins from concept through production.

We're looking for a Mechanical or Electrical Engineer who can comfortably engage customers, understand complex engineering challenges, and translate technical requirements into business opportunities. The ideal candidate enjoys being in front of customers, building long-term partnerships, and becoming a trusted advisor throughout the design cycle.
Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary technical liaison for key customers, providing expert application support on connector, interconnect, and electronic assemblies.
  • Lead on-site and remote technical engagements including design reviews, prototype testing, troubleshooting, and performance optimization.
  • Collaborate with sales and product management to define customer requirements, develop application proposals, and drive solution adoption.
  • Support product integration with electrical and mechanical systems, ensuring compatibility, reliability, and manufacturability.
  • Develop and deliver technical presentations, trainings, and design guidelines for customers and internal teams.
  • Document application findings, create technical reports, and track issues through to resolution with R&D and quality teams.
  • Provide feedback to product development on connector design, interconnects, and electronics trends to influence roadmaps and new features.
  • Mentor junior application engineers, sharing best practices in testing, validation, and customer communications.
  • Participate in trade shows, customer visits, and cross-functional project meetings to promote products and gather market intelligence.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field
  • 5+ years of field applications engineering, or related customer-facing engineering experience, ideally with connector and interconnect products.
  • Strong electrical and electronic knowledge including signal integrity, power distribution, and electromagnetic compatibility.
  • Hands-on experience with mechanical aspects of connector design, assembly, and validation.
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot complex system-level issues in the field and collaborate with R&D to implement fixes.
  • Excellent communication skills for presenting technical concepts to customers and internal stakeholders.
  • Experience with test equipment (oscilloscopes, network analyzers, power analyzers) and prototype validation.
  • Willingness to travel regularly to customer sites and manufacturing partners.

Benefits

  • $130K-$170K (DOE)
  • Medical, Vision, Dental
  • 401k
