The Engineer is responsible for the structural analysis and design of lighting, traffic, and sign structures for both municipal and commercial applications.  In this individual contributor role, the incumbent is responsible for completing engineering designs to meet project requirements as defined by customers and provide technical engineering support to both internal and external sales and customers.  In addition, the incumbent plans and monitors workflow of design activities to meet milestone dates for projects assigned.  Product lines the individual may work on include aluminum, steel, and composite highway lighting,traffic, and sign  structures.  All of these products that impact the public’s day-to-day activities must be designed to meet a variety of design code requirements such as the American Association of State Highway and Traffic Officials (AASHTO) and International Building Code (IBC).  The design team is responsible for day-to-day customer support, identifying changes in the design process to support industry trends and supporting the manufacturing facilities within the global Valmont footprint to ensure designs are prepared properly for production.   This role joins a growing development path for an Engineering interested in working with an ever developing product portfolio at Valmont.

Essential Functions:

  • Perform routine engineering work requiring application of engineering standards, procedures and criteria in carrying out a sequence of related design tasks
  • Analyze and design Lighting,  Traffic, and Sign Structures using structural design software in conjunction with hand calculations and FEM in accordance with industry design codes while taking into consideration both public safety and minimum cost
  • Ability to design structures and foundation designs to support varying site conditions in conjunction with contractor surveys.
  • Primary contact with operations to focus on design for manufacturing projects
  • Interpret customer specifications, customer needs and market/sales needs
  • Communicate engineering data to customers both internal and external
  • Assisting sales with pricing and quoting information as it relates to engineering
  • Assist in developing and maintaining an ongoing library of design standards for individual customers to help improve efficiency and provide prompt customer support while also collaborating with other engineers in enhancing engineering standards and tools. 
  • Domestic and International travel may be required up to 10%

Other Important Details about the Role:

  • Hybrid or remote work is available with occasional time in the office for staff meetings and during initial training. 
  • Reviews and interprets project plans, specifications and customer requirements and designs the most efficient and economical structures to meet those requirements, while taking into account site-specific geographic and environmental (wind and ice) conditions and adhering to the applicable Valmont and national design standards
  • Independently able to perform the analysis and design of standard products, with occasional assistance of senior level engineers
  • Assists internal personnel (e.g. drafters, project administrators) in the review and interpretation of any design work generated either manually or with a computer design program
  • Review and approve design drawings for both internal and external customers
  • Through occasional customer contact by telephone, written communication and occasional personal visits, establish positive working relationships with Valmont’s customers while maintaining Valmont’s standing as a technical leader in the industry.
  • Works with manufacturing personnel to ensure that product designs can be manufactured efficiently
  • Possess an innate curiosity to improve processes and procedures that will improve the Design team capabilities and reduce cycle times

Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering with 2 to 3 years-experience in civil or structural design.
  • Ability to read/interpret multiple design standards and apply to real world applications
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities with schedule accountability
  • Strong technical competence in structural/civil engineering with a willingness to take on new engineering challenges both individually and as part of a team. 
  • Have the necessary background to obtain licensure as a Professional Engineering upon completion of experience requirements.
  • Demonstrated strengths in interpersonal skills, including the ability to adapt and professionally communicate with people in various disciplines and management levels
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office Products, especially: Excel, Word and Outlook
  • The ability to solve complex problems with high attention to detail and work in a fast-paced environment subject to specific deadlines

Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Emphasis.
  • Licensed as a professional engineer with ability to obtain licensure in multiple states
  • 3 years related engineering experience in municipal/roadway design applications
  • Strong AutoCAD or 3D modeling skills, including design applications

"The annual base salary range for this position in most major metropolitan areas is $$72,000 - $112,500. Please note that the salary information is a general guideline only. Valmont Industries considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, and market and business considerations when extending an offer."
