Job Summary:

This position is responsible for supporting environmental regulatory compliance for NorthStar Energy and its portfolio companies, which includes planning and implementing environmental policies and procedures in compliance with local, state, and federal rules and regulations. This position may be required to fulfill the role of designated Qualified Individual (QI) for spill response. Additionally, the person filling this role may be required to fulfill primary and/or alternate roles on one or more company Incident Management Teams (IMTs).

Essential Functions:
  • Develops, implements, and provides support for environmental programs. This may include air quality, aboveground storage tanks, contaminated sites, drills and exercises, due diligence, hazardous chemicals, piping, response plans, security, spill prevention and response, tankship management, underground storage tanks, waste, water, and wildlife. Specific areas of focus will be determined based on the successful application in conjunction with departmental needs and may change over time. This position will also provide day to day support in the areas of response plan updates and development, spill prevention and response, and waste management.
  • Engages within the Environmental Department and internal business partners in a positive way to develop best practices in environmental compliance and to provide guidance and training.
  • Effectively communicates with agency personnel, industry colleagues, contractors, and coworkers.
  • Develops and implements environmental initiatives including the development of compliance summaries, internal informational guidance documents, training modules, presentations, plans, bulletins, forms, manuals, and electronic content. 
  • Prepares, reviews, and edits regulatory plans, permits, and applications.
  • Inspects facilities for environmental compliance.
  • Audits inspection forms, plans, and other documents for compliance.
  • Participates in industry meetings, conferences, and training. May be asked to sit on boards or committees of industry organizations.
  • Assists in the development and administration of environmental compliance system.
  • Models and supports NorthStarโ€™s commitment to compliance and safety at all times.
  • This position requires travel primarily within Alaska, Washington, and California. Periodic travel to other locations may be required.
  • Provides support to Director of Environmental Affairs as needed, including special projects and ad hoc requests.
  • All other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience: 
  • Bachelorโ€™s Degree in Science, Engineering, or a related field
  • Minimum of 1 year of relevant experience in environmental compliance, environmental consulting, waste management, or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. At least 1 year of relevant work experience beyond college is required.
  • Experience working with regulations and/or regulators in one or more of the following states: Alaska, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, and Washington; fuel storage facilities and infrastructure; tank barges; multi-media compliance; response plan updates and development; spill record management and reporting; IMTs; air quality; and/or waste management is a significant plus.
