Remote Engineering Management Consulting information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Engineering Management Consultant, and why are they important?

To excel as a Remote Engineering Management Consultant, you need a solid engineering background, proven leadership experience, and a relevant degree or certification in engineering or management. Familiarity with project management tools like Jira, collaboration platforms such as Slack or Microsoft Teams, and consulting frameworks like Six Sigma or PMP certification is highly beneficial. Outstanding communication, problem-solving, and adaptability are crucial soft skills for building client trust and leading distributed teams. These competencies enable effective project delivery, foster innovation, and ensure client satisfaction in a remote consulting environment.

What are some common challenges faced by remote engineering management consultants, and how can they be effectively addressed?

Remote engineering management consultants often encounter challenges such as maintaining clear communication across distributed teams, managing project timelines across time zones, and building client trust without in-person interactions. To address these, consultants should leverage collaboration tools, establish regular virtual check-ins, and set clear expectations with clients and teams. Proactively fostering an open communication culture and documenting processes also contribute to smoother project execution and stronger client relationships.

What is remote engineering management consulting?

Remote engineering management consulting involves providing expert advice and support to engineering teams and organizations from a remote location. Consultants help companies optimize their engineering processes, improve team performance, implement best practices, and solve technical or organizational challenges. They may work on project management, workflow improvements, leadership coaching, or technology adoption, all while collaborating virtually. This role allows companies to access specialized expertise without geographical constraints.

This role will lead quality strategy, test planning, and delivery assurance across multiple Agile teams supporting APIs, integrations, platform services, and user-facing applications. The selected candidate will collaborate closely with engineering, product, and release leadership to ensure high-quality software delivery within a DevSecOps environment.

The candidate must reside within the continental US.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead quality engineering strategy across multiple teams supporting software delivery, platform operations, and data integration initiatives.
  • Define and evolve testing approaches for functional, integration, regression, non-functional, and release validation activities.
  • Coordinate quality planning activities across product, engineering, and operations stakeholders to ensure release readiness and delivery confidence.
  • Establish and monitor quality metrics, defect trends, test coverage, and release health indicators.
  • Guide the adoption of test automation frameworks, CI/CD quality gates, and quality engineering best practices.
  • Review user stories, requirements, and technical designs to ensure testability and quality considerations are incorporated early in the development lifecycle.
  • Collaborate with Test Automation Engineers and developers to improve coverage across API, middleware, data, and UI layers.
  • Support root cause analysis, defect triage, and corrective actions for production and pre-production issues.
  • Mentor QA and test engineering personnel while driving continuous improvement initiatives across delivery teams.
  • Partner with release and program leadership to support milestone readiness, auditability, and delivery transparency.
  • Contribute to team objectives and take on additional responsibilities as needed.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or a related technical field, or equivalent experience.
  • 10+ years of experience in software quality assurance, test engineering, or quality leadership roles.
  • Experience leading test strategy and quality engineering activities for enterprise or federal technology programs.
  • Strong understanding of Agile delivery methodologies, CI/CD pipelines, and quality engineering practices within DevSecOps environments.
  • Experience supporting API, middleware, integration, data, and end-to-end system testing.
  • Knowledge of defect management, test management, and reporting tools such as Jira and related platforms.
  • Experience defining test plans, quality metrics, and release readiness criteria.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and coordination skills across technical and non-technical teams.
  • Experience working closely with developers, product managers, and operations teams to improve software quality outcomes.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a government clearance.

Additional Qualifications:

  • Experience supporting Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) or other federal healthcare initiatives.
  • Familiarity with healthcare interoperability standards, API-based integrations, or healthcare data workflows.
  • Experience with accessibility, security, compliance, or performance testing practices.
  • Relevant certifications in software testing, Agile, SAFe, or quality engineering methodologies.
  • Experience leading distributed or remote engineering and QA teams.

Benefits:

  • Medical/Dental/Vision.
