Remote Embedded System Design information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Embedded System Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Embedded System Designer, you need a solid background in electronics engineering, embedded programming (such as C/C++), and experience with microcontrollers or FPGA architectures, typically backed by a relevant degree. Familiarity with tools like MATLAB, Simulink, Altium Designer, and version control systems, along with certifications like Certified Embedded Systems Engineer, is often required. Strong problem-solving abilities, self-motivation, and effective remote communication skills help professionals excel in distributed teams. These capabilities ensure the efficient development, testing, and deployment of reliable embedded systems in a remote work environment.

What are some common challenges faced by remote embedded system design engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Remote embedded system design engineers often encounter challenges such as limited access to physical hardware for testing, communication barriers with cross-functional teams, and coordinating firmware updates across different environments. These can be addressed by utilizing remote access tools, simulation environments, and efficient project management platforms to facilitate collaboration and testing. Regular virtual meetings and clear documentation also help ensure alignment with hardware teams and smooth integration throughout the project lifecycle.

What is the difference between Remote Embedded System Design vs Remote Firmware Developer?

AspectRemote Embedded System DesignRemote Firmware Developer
CredentialsBachelor's in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related fields; knowledge of hardware and software integrationBachelor's in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related; proficiency in programming languages like C/C++
Work EnvironmentDesigning hardware-software systems, often collaborating with hardware teamsWriting and testing firmware code for embedded devices

Remote Embedded System Design focuses on creating integrated hardware and software solutions, while Remote Firmware Developer primarily writes and tests firmware code. Both roles require technical skills but differ in their core responsibilities and work focus.

What is remote embedded system design?

Remote embedded system design involves creating and developing embedded systems—specialized computing hardware and software that perform dedicated functions—while working from a location outside of the traditional office or laboratory. Professionals in this field use remote collaboration tools to design, develop, test, and troubleshoot embedded hardware and firmware for devices like IoT gadgets, medical devices, automotive systems, and industrial controllers. This remote approach allows teams to work together across different geographic locations, leveraging cloud-based development environments and hardware simulation tools to ensure seamless integration and functionality.

Job description

The Strategic Finance team is focused on solving some of Figma's most pressing business issues. The team is responsible for owning the company's budget, driving annual and quarterly planning processes, allocating and deploying the company's resources efficiently, performing financial analyses, and partnering with teams across the company.

This role requires someone who can own and evolve the finance systems backbone at Figma and drive outsized impact as we scale toward more automated, intelligent, and AI-enabled planning. We're looking for someone who is highly analytical and strategic, a great communicator, approaches problems in a structured manner, and is comfortable with ambiguity. You'll get substantial visibility, focus on the highest-priority business issues, and be plugged into every facet of the business.

This is a full-time role that can be held from one of our US hubs (SF / NY) or remotely in the United States.

What you'll do at Figma:

  • Drive the execution of transformational projects by applying their finance and systems expertise, collaborating with partners across the organization, and defining business processes that improve automation, standardization, and simplicity
  • Influence Figma Finance's AI adoption strategy, defining how AI can be embedded into systems and workflows as infrastructure to drive analysis, reporting, and forecast decisions and execute on adoption alongside the team
  • Serve as the functional and technical owner of the financial planning platform (Pigment), leading development, enhancement, training, enablement, maintenance, and administration
  • Own the systems roadmap end-to-end, including prioritization, resource deployment, UAT, and governance
  • Design and evolve a best-in-class systems architecture, optimizing data flows, integrations, and tooling with influence extending beyond Pigment and Finance data to the broader company data ecosystem
  • Establish strong cross-functional partnerships with Strategic Finance Data Science, Data Engineering, Accounting, and Operations to influence data architecture, design integrations and optimize business processes & sophisticated forecasting in Pigment and Agentic tooling
  • Develop dashboards and data visualizations to surface key KPIs and business insights
  • Drive best practices across systems controls, data governance, and change management frameworks

We'd love to hear from you if you have:

  • 5+ years of experience in Finance Systems, roadmap execution or a related function
  • Strong technical skills with system design & implementation, AI automation, data architecture, integrations
  • Working knowledge of financial processes including O2C, P2P, FP&A, Accounting Ops, and close cycles
  • Strong project management instincts, with ability to run multiple workstreams simultaneously
  • Clear, structured communicator across technical and non-technical audiences

While it's not required, it's an added plus if you have:

  • Proficiency with SQL
  • Data science background
  • Experience managing consultants or external resources
At Figma, one of our values is Grow as you go. We believe in hiring smart, curious people who are excited to learn and develop their skills. If you're excited about this role but your past experience doesn't align perfectly with the points outlined in the job description, we encourage you to apply anyways. You may be just the right candidate for this or other roles.
