The main difference is that Remote Electromagnetic Compatibility Emc Engineers focus on ensuring electronic devices meet EMC standards to prevent interference, while Remote RF Engineers specialize in designing and testing radio frequency systems and antennas. Both roles require technical expertise but differ in their specific focus areas within the electronics and communications industries.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, knowledge of EMC standards, and experience with compliance testing, usually supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with EMC test equipment, simulation software (such as CST or HFSS), and certifications like iNARTE EMC Engineer are typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating across teams and interpreting complex data remotely. These skills ensure product compliance with regulatory standards, minimize interference risks, and enable efficient troubleshooting in a remote work environment.

What are Remote Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Engineers?

Remote Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Engineers are professionals who specialize in ensuring that electronic devices and systems operate without causing or being affected by electromagnetic interference, while working from a remote location. They analyze, test, and troubleshoot products to comply with EMC regulations and standards, often collaborating with design teams and regulatory bodies through digital communication tools. Their responsibilities may include developing EMC testing procedures, reviewing product designs, and preparing compliance documentation, all carried out remotely.

How do Remote Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Engineers typically collaborate with cross-functional teams in a virtual work environment?

Remote EMC Engineers frequently work with design, hardware, and testing teams to ensure products meet regulatory standards for electromagnetic compatibility. This collaboration is often facilitated through virtual meetings, shared documentation platforms, and simulation tools, allowing for efficient communication and troubleshooting across locations. Regular coordination with project managers and compliance specialists also helps align EMC testing schedules with overall project timelines. Adapting to remote work requires strong communication skills and proficiency with digital collaboration tools to maintain seamless workflow and effective problem-solving.

Job description

SR. PRODUCT COMPLIANCE ENGINEER (STARLINK)

SpaceX is leveraging its experience building rockets and spacecraft to deploy Starlink, the world's most advanced broadband internet system. Starlink is the world's largest satellite constellation that provides fast, reliable internet to millions of users worldwide. We design, build, manufacture, and operate all parts of the system including thousands of satellites and millions of customer kits. Our customers currently include teachers in the most remote parts of the Amazon, researchers in Antarctica, digital nomads who travel via RV, emergency responders, commercial airlines, cruise lines, and residential users who live in more rural or developing areas. While users can get online within minutes almost anywhere in the world, we've only begun to scratch the surface of Starlink's potential. We are looking for best-in-class engineers to help maximize Starlink's utility for individuals, communities, and businesses.

Product Compliance Engineers will play a critical role as SpaceX strives to deliver internet to those that need it most. They will drive regulatory efforts, impact internal design decisions, and obtain the product certifications needed to sell and ship millions of consumer-facing devices. These devices - including Starlink dishes, Wi-Fi routers, power supply, accessories, etc. - are designed and manufactured completely in-house by SpaceX. We are looking for a multi-disciplinary Product Compliance Engineer who is highly capable across EMC, Product Safety, Wireless, or Environmental compliance. This role will support broader certification needs for Starlink hardware and serve as a key technical leader for global market access programs. Engineers on the team will be hands-on, regularly interact with multiple technical disciplines, and ultimately ensure that Starlink is a global success.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Drive end-to-end product compliance and global market access for Starlink hardware (EMC, Safety, Radio, and Environmental)
  • Coordinate certification programs across multiple disciplines and geographies
  • Collaborate with design teams to embed compliance requirements early in the development cycle
  • Manage relationships with test labs, Notified Bodies, and certification agencies worldwide
  • Own technical construction files and support global regulatory submissions
  • Identify and resolve complex compliance issues across safety, EMC, RF, and materials

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in and engineering or STEM discipline
  • 5+ years of experience in compliance and certification engineering (internship experience is applicable)

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • 10+ years of progressive experience in product compliance engineering
  • Broad experience across EMC, Product Safety, RF/Wireless, and Environmental compliance
  • Hands-on experience with FCC, CE, UL, IEC, EN, RED, RoHS, REACH and related standards
  • Demonstrated success certifying consumer electronics or telecommunications equipment for global markets
  • Strong project management and cross-functional leadership skills
  • Ability to quickly ramp up on new regulations and standards
  • Excellent communicator who can translate complex technical/regulatory topics for engineering audiences

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to work extended hours or weekends as needed for mission critical deadlines
