What is a remote electrical engineer?

A remote electrical engineer is a professional who designs, develops, tests, and supervises the manufacturing of electrical equipment and systems while working from a location outside a traditional office or on-site setting. Using digital tools and communication platforms, they collaborate with teams, manage projects, and perform technical tasks from home or other remote locations. This role is ideal for those who have strong technical skills, are self-motivated, and can work independently while ensuring that all engineering standards and deadlines are met.

How do remote electrical engineers typically collaborate with on-site teams to ensure successful project delivery?

Remote electrical engineers often use collaboration tools like video conferencing, cloud-based design platforms, and project management software to stay connected with on-site teams. They participate in regular virtual meetings to discuss project updates, resolve technical challenges, and coordinate design changes. Clear communication and detailed documentation are essential to bridging the physical distance, ensuring that all stakeholders are aligned on project requirements and timelines. Successfully working remotely in this role requires proactive engagement and strong organizational skills to manage tasks effectively across locations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote electrical engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Electrical Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering principles, problem-solving abilities, and a relevant degree such as a BS or MS in Electrical Engineering. Proficiency with CAD software, circuit simulation tools, and familiarity with industry standards and certifications like PE (Professional Engineer) are typically required. Strong communication, self-motivation, and time management skills help remote engineers collaborate effectively and manage projects independently. These skills ensure accurate project execution, effective teamwork across locations, and the ability to deliver reliable engineering solutions remotely.

Job description

ECG Engineering are leaders in the Electrical Engineering space, delivering design and project delivery services to the Mining, Utilities, Materials Handling and Industrial sectors with extensive and proven capabilities in Australia, and around the world.

With offices in Perth, Brisbane, Toronto, Manila & Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania and Cape Town, ECG have the capability to design and deliver on complex projects, from early study work to commissioning and handover, drawing on the expertise of senior ECG personnel who have worked together for 30 + years.

We require a Lead Electrical Engineer to join our Toronto based design team, contributing & coordinating design on a major international mineral processing project that ECG has been driving from study phase through to execution.

Key Requirements

Have a solid understanding of technical (E, I&C) principals relating to the large industrial & complex operational assets that our clients own and operate

  • Relevant Electrical engineering degree or equivalent qualification
  • Experience co ordinating / driving specialized electrical teams, on front end greenfield and brownfield development projects with complex electrical scope
  • LV design experience (PowerCAD proficient, LV MCC design, protection & co-ordination studies)
  • Major project design experience throughout the design cycle
  • Experience / exposure to project delivery, driving a job, (not necessarily an entire project!)
  • Understand the project development process for juniors/mid-tier miners
  • Provide specialized advice and guidance to client
  • The ability to contribute / influence in a meeting; exercises good judgment on how to contribute, and collaborative behaviour

The role will be Toronto based, working with an established design team, however there may be occasional input on the studies and reports of our Perth and Brisbane office, as well as the coordination of works from our engineering office in Manila.

To be considered for the role of Lead Electrical Engineer you need solid design experience on complex high value electrical projects, with an understanding of the differences between plant designed for Canada based projects, and the realities of offshore remote mining plant construction: (think Africa).

ECG Engineering offers a generous remuneration package, plus the opportunity to join an engineering firm with a workplace culture second to none.

If this sounds like the opportunity for you, apply via link below, or schedule a call with Mike Wylie in the Perth (Australia) office, for a confidential conversation on the role.

Only Applications from Canada will be considered.
