Rolling Stock Remote Monitoring Systems Engineer

Role purpose: Responsible for driving reliability, usage and expansion of Remote Monitoring Systems across Commuter Rail Rolling Stock Equipment including Wi-Tronix, Wabtec RMD, LRMS (Layover Remote Monitoring System), Web-ACSES, FleetONE RailBAM/WCM, and Salient WILD

Minimum Knowledge and Experience:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering preferred.
  • Experience in a Technical role within a complex railroad organization 2 years + of demonstrated experience.
  • Strong knowledge of traction and rolling stock, fault finding, and modern approaches to equipment maintenance.
  • Demonstrated acumen with regulatory requirements affecting passenger railroad operations including FRA and OSHA regulations.
  • Experience with using and developing IOT technology.
  • Key personal traits: collaborative, forward thinking, proactive, resilient, sound judgement, innovative where it’s required, driven by a relentless pursuit of excellence.

Key Accountabilities (Essential Job Duties):

  • Demonstrate understanding and adhere to the KCS principles of Employee Engagement, Operational Excellence & Safety, Customer Satisfaction, Corporate Social Responsibility and Economic Performance.
  • Provide managerial leadership to the Mechanical Department employees. This includes individual coaching, development, and managerial support.
  • Function as a rolling stock technical subject matter expert to provide technical assistance to transportation crews and mechanical personnel.

Remote Monitoring Systems Reliability:

  • Put in place processes and procedures to drive reliability of remote monitoring systems.
  • Develop Work Instructions for routine preventative maintenance to inspect and repair remote monitoring systems.

Remote Monitoring Systems Usage:

  • Support the training department in the development of training courses and materials and provide informal training, instructional sessions, and hands on training to employees related to Remote Monitoring Systems.
  • Develop Work Instructions and Job Aids for using Remote Monitoring Systems.
  • Collaborate directly with technicians to increase their ability to use data from Remote Monitoring Systems to support troubleshooting and repair validation.

Remote Monitoring Systems Expansion:

  • Identify problem areas and work with internal subject matter experts to identify further opportunities for remote monitoring.
  • Identify and solicit 3rd party vendors to provide remote monitoring solutions.
  • Work with Mechanical and other departments to build business cases and present opportunities to MBTA for funding.
  • Collaborate with the Technical Team and MBTA to develop prototypes and oversee first of class installs.
  • Work with Mechanical Data Analyst, Keolis Digital Solutions, and 3rd party vendors to combine data from remote monitoring systems and create custom dashboards to support commuter rail fleet reliability and performance.

General Requirements:

  • Document key processes to ensure they are consistently delivered and there is no uncertainty about the scope of work that is required.
  • Support the delivery of Keolis and MBTA Projects as directed.
  • Support the other members of the Mechanical Department as required.
  • Comply with all safety rules and procedures and report all hazards as required. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions (including Physical Demands):

  • This role is primarily Monday – Friday Day Shift but may require occasional overnight or weekend support.
  • There is a mixture of office work and on equipment troubleshooting.
  • Frequent travel to Commuter Rail locations other than BET is expected.
