Job Description – Editorial Director

The Editorial Director will play a key role in driving consumer engagement across the A+E Global Media digital experience. The Editorial Director will oversee Digital Editorial Operations for A+E Global Media brands - including History, Lifetime, A&E - to produce relevant and engaging content that goes far beyond linear television programming. The Editorial Director will articulate and implement a compelling vision for our content while also managing calendars, assigning stories, editing, and creating incredible content experiences across formats. You will also seek out dynamic storytellers and leverage a team of staff and freelance writers to create differentiated voices for each brand.

The position reports to the SVP, Head of Editorial and Creative, and will manage a team of approximately seven people.

WHAT YOU'LL DO
  • Oversee strategic direction of A+E Global Media editorial websites and content
  • Oversee story planning and development
  • Top edit and review content for publication, considering and balancing multiple factors
  • Develop editorial calendars across History, A&E, and Lifetime
  • Create and manage editorial processes, schedules, and workflows
  • Work with Content Strategy team to review metrics methodically and frequently to apply toward editorial decisions including best practices for SEO/AEO
  • Manage section editors and help them develop
  • Collaborate with Programming to create content around shows, ensuring content is accurate, using approved images/languages, right with tone.
  • Represent Editorial team to collaborate with other departments
  • Explore innovative approaches to consumer engagement on sites (interactivity, etc.)
BASIC REQUIREMENTS
  • Minimum 10 years of progressive journalism experience, with a proven track record of managing successful editorial teams of at least 5-10 people
  • Experience managing budgets
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in managing complex editorial projects with multiple stakeholders
  • Mastery of best practices for all aspects of editorial process for digital publications
  • Excellent presentation skills, with the ability to articulate editorial strategies and outcomes clearly to internal and external stakeholders
  • Proficiency with a CMS; familiarity with Airtable and metrics tools such as Adobe or Parse.ly
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Deep understanding of journalistic standards and practices.
  • Effective conflict resolution, problem-solving skills, and ability to build and nurture a team.
  • Focus on data driven decision making.
  • Ability to balance near term business needs with innovation for the future.
  • BA/BS degree in related degree required.
WHO YOU ARE
  • A passionate storyteller with an inborn desire to create the best content experiences for audiences
  • Extensive online editorial experience at a digitally native content company, newspaper, or magazine; TV experience is welcome, but not essential
  • A manager with a contact list of great writers
  • A track record of using content and content channels (social, email, etc.) to acquire audiences
  • Success using photography, infographics, animations, and other visualizations to tell stories
  • A keen understanding of how content choices impact products, and the chops to work with our Content Strategy, Product and Tech teams to find solutions that work for the consumer
  • Charisma and interpersonal savvy to work with Marketing, Programming, Sales and other departments within the company. Success in this job will require showing how your content vision helps multiple departments succeed at their goals
  • Understanding of how AI impacts the editorial landscape and how to use AI effectively
Compensation

Annual Pay Range: $133,477 - $156,168

Annual Incentive Target: 17.50%

The annual/hourly pay range displayed serves as a good faith estimate of the minimum and maximum base pay range for this role. Compensation for the role will be based on a number of different factors such as a candidate's qualifications, skills, competencies, location, and experience.
