What are Remote Editorial Designers?

Remote Editorial Designers are professionals who create the visual layout and design of publications such as magazines, newspapers, and digital content while working from a location outside of the traditional office. They collaborate with editors, writers, and photographers to ensure that the visual presentation supports the publication's content and tone. Their work includes arranging text, images, and graphics, often using design software, and adhering to brand guidelines. Remote Editorial Designers need strong communication skills to work effectively with teams across different locations and time zones. This role is ideal for creative individuals who are comfortable with digital collaboration tools and can manage deadlines independently.

How does a Remote Editorial Designer collaborate effectively with writers and editors despite working offsite?

Remote Editorial Designers typically use digital collaboration tools like Slack, Trello, and Zoom to maintain clear communication with writers and editors. Regular check-ins, shared project timelines, and cloud-based design platforms ensure that everyone stays aligned on deadlines and content direction. Designers are often included in editorial meetings virtually to discuss layout concepts and receive feedback in real time. This collaborative approach helps maintain a cohesive workflow, even when team members are distributed across different locations.

Job description

About the Role

Marketplace and American Public Media recently formed the Public Radio Business

Network to deepen our editorial relationships with our 800+ partner stations. The network is designed to prioritize collaboration, add a local lens to the economic storytelling audiences rely on and amplify regional content for Marketplace shows. We are looking for an experienced collaborative multichannel leader who wants to build something new and help the public media ecosystem thrive.

Deeply embedded with the Marketplace newsroom, the Station Engagement Editor will serve as a bridge between stations and their reporting staff and Marketplace's national newsroom. Through regular editorial collaborations, shared reporting efforts and special content partnerships, this role will help bring local economic stories to national audiences while helping participating stations strengthen the regional reporting they provide to their communities.

This position will also partner with APM Distribution and other internal teams to identify regions and stations with limited capacity for local economic reporting, strengthen reporting resources where possible and support sustainable editorial collaborations. As we gain a deeper understanding of station needs, the Station Engagement Editor will also serve as a creative guide for new content that supports and draws on the network. Rooted in audio and the needs of our partner stations across the country, this work will create meaningful multi-platform programming, which is critical to establishing sustainable revenue for stations.

NOTE: This is a grant funded position for three years.

Expected Compensation Range: $135,000 - $145,000 per year. The exact salary rate is determined by experience and education related to the role, organizational compensation structure, and internal equity.

Location: Remote
Application Process: Applicants must be authorized to work for ANY employer in the U.S. We are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa at this time.
Application Deadline:
Open until filled.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a bridge between local and national journalism by fostering strong editorial relationships with station partners, their reporters, and the Marketplace newsroom.
  • Collaborate with stations and Marketplace editors to identify coverage priorities, editorial streams and special projects that strengthen Marketplace's regional reporting footprint.
  • Develop, manage and edit joint programming projects with stations including regional business reports, multichannel content, and joint events that highlight local economic stories.
  • Plan, negotiate and assign coverage to ensure timely and relevant reports for Marketplace programs and joint projects.
  • Coordinate with digital and social teams to deliver compelling, multi-platform content—including digital adaptations of the reporting projects, regional campaigns.
  • Assign, edit, and shape multichannel elements that meet Marketplace’s high standards for originality, clarity and insight.
  • Provide editorial support, guidance and reporting resources to stations with limited dedicated business or economic coverage
  • Host regular editorial meetings with station content leaders to generate story ideas and shared projects and to ensure a consistent pipeline of high-quality station-originated content for Marketplace programs.
  • Facilitate virtual reporter roundtables with Marketplace journalists to explore how national economic trends play out regionally.
  • Partner with APM Distribution to help expand APM’s digital underwriting network, supporting increased revenue opportunities for stations.
  • Maintain and communicate production schedules, deadlines, and editorial plans for assigned elements.
  • Respond rapidly to breaking news and plan proactively to anticipate upcoming economic trends and events.
  • Ensure all work meets Marketplace’s journalistic standards for accuracy, fairness, balance, and editorial excellence.
  • As needed, supervise team members - providing clear editorial direction, coaching, mentorship, and performance feedback that build staff skills.
  • Foster a creative, inclusive, and collaborative work environment.
  • Model strong editorial judgment and production leadership under deadline pressure.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Minimum of ten years of experience in editing, reporting, producing, or related journalistic work.

  • Excellent editorial judgment and a deep commitment to accuracy, fairness, and editorial integrity.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a high-performing newsroom.
  • Advanced editing skills capable of shaping nuanced and multi-layered coverage of economic and financial topics.
  • Strong ability to develop compelling story ideas, manage assignments, and edit for broadcast and digital platforms.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver national-quality journalism on deadline.
  • Strong decision-making skills in assessing credibility, narrative value, and newsworthiness.
  • Ability to build and maintain strong working relationships with staff, contributors, and freelance reporters.
  • Ability to motivate, mentor, and grow early-career and experienced journalists.
  • Strong critical reading, analytical, and listening skills.
  • Deep understanding of and commitment to the mission and values of public radio.
  • Excellent communication and team-building skills, with the ability to resolve conflict and strengthen team culture.
