Job description

Are you excited by the opportunity to mentor journalists, shape editorial strategy, and drive excellence across award-winning data-driven reporting?

Do you enjoy uncovering meaningful stories in complex datasets and turning them into journalism that informs and engages readers?

About our Team

Law360 provides breaking legal news and analysis on the most important topics legal professionals, business leaders and regulators need to stay on top of issues, safeguard clients and sharpen their competitive edge. The award-winning journalism of Law360 keeps readers connected to the latest, most essential news and insights across 70+ practice areas, industries and jurisdictions, including federal litigation, business deals, mergers & acquisitions, security and more. Law360, which serves more than 2.7 million readers every day, is owned by LexisNexis Legal & Professional and part of RELX, a global provider of information-based analytics and decision tools for professional and business customers.

About the Role

Law360 is seeking an Assistant Managing Editor to lead the editorial side of our data team - overseeing reporters, editors and research specialists who turn data into compelling, rigorous journalism and making sure our data-driven series are reported, written, edited and produced to the highest standards.

This is a hands-on editorial leadership role. The AME will shape story ideas, coach reporters and editors, and own the quality of everything the team publishes, from recurring data series to one-off investigative pieces. The AME will work closely with graphics, research and survey analysts to make sure the numbers behind our stories are sound and the storytelling around them is clear and engaging.

The AME will also help develop new data-driven series, identify datasets worth building, and help guide and shape surveys and research that are topical and genuinely relevant to our audience. We're looking for someone who can look at a dataset and see the stories that readers will care about.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage a team of data reporters and editors, setting clear standards for reporting, writing and production across our data-driven series.

  • Ensure data journalism is edited for accuracy, clarity, fairness and narrative strength - making sure complex numbers translate into stories readers can actually use.

  • Develop and pitch story and series ideas, and guide projects from concept through publication in collaboration with reporters, editors and graphics staff.

  • Coach and develop reporters and editors, helping them sharpen both their data skills and their writing.

  • Own the editorial quality and integrity of the team's output, including how data and statistical findings are interpreted and presented.

  • Partner with survey and research specialists to make sure reporting is accurate, well-sourced and clearly explained.

  • Coordinate cross-functional collaboration so stories publish on time and meet the highest standards.

Requirements

  • 7-10+ years of relevant experience in newsrooms, with a strong track record in data-driven or investigative reporting and editing

  • Demonstrated leadership or team management experience in a newsroom

  • Sharp editorial judgment and strong editing skills, especially with data-heavy stories

  • Comfort working with data of varying quality and completeness, and the ability to spot when the numbers don't add up

  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain complex concepts to diverse audiences

  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively across teams

Preferences

  • Experience editing or producing recurring data series or investigative projects

  • Familiarity with data analysis tools such as R or Python

  • Experience with data visualization techniques

  • Legal industry reporting or research experience

  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously

  • Degree in journalism, public policy, political science, economics, statistics or a related field
