Job description

100% Remote | Advisory-Focused Tax Firm | Busy-Season Workweeks under 48 Hours!
Base Comp to $110K + Bonus + Employer-Paid Benefits

How would you like to do the work you love, but not have to sacrifice your family or your life at the altar of your job to do it?

If that's you, keep reading...

Our client is a boutique tax planning and advisory firm serving small business owners and high-net-worth individuals who want a proactive, year-round financial partner. This is not a volume shop. The work is complex, the clients are engaged, and the team is small enough that everyone's contribution is visible and matters.

They are adding a Senior Tax Specialist to take ownership of an assigned client portfolio, independently prepare and review individual and business returns, and help ensure work gets out the door accurately and on time. If you have strong preparation experience across complex return types, know how to manage your own workload, and take ownership without being pushed - keep reading.

Why This Role is Worth Your Attention

โ€ข Complex work, not volume work. The client base consists of small business owners and high-net-worth individuals with multi-entity structures, multi-state filings, and returns that require real technical depth. This is not a 1040 factory.

โ€ข Ownership from day one. You will manage assigned client files from document intake through filing. The expectation is that you know what you are doing and can execute without constant direction.

โ€ข A leader who invests in people. A firm owner who is committed to training, mentoring, developing and growing staff. If you raise a problem, they will help you solve it. They would rather fix a mistake early than not know about it at all. That kind of culture is harder to find than most people realize.

โ€ข Real onboarding structure. The firm uses Trainual to walk every new hire through a structured onboarding covering software certifications, process walkthroughs, and one-on-one time with every member of the team before you are assigned independent work.

โ€ข Education and certification investment. The firm covers certification costs, pays bonuses for earned credentials, and funds continuing education. They expect you to keep getting better, and they put money and time behind that expectation.

โ€ข Real Work-Life Balance. While many firms talk about it, it's rare to find a firm that actually lives it out. Busy season the last three years has averaged 44-45 hours per week with the longest week topping out at 48. If you think your future in public accounting must be coupled with sacrificing your personal life to succeed in your professional life, think again!

What You Will Do

โ€ข Independently prepare individual 1040 returns for small business owners, high-net-worth individuals, and complex personal tax situations including Schedule C, Schedule E, multi-state, and investment activity

โ€ข Prepare business returns including S-Corporations (1120-S), Partnerships (1065), and C-Corporations (1120), including multi-entity client structures

โ€ข Manage assigned client files from document collection through e-filing - missing information, open items, follow-up, and deadline management are yours to own

โ€ข Review client-provided records for completeness, accuracy, and consistency before preparation begins

โ€ข Catch your own errors and technical issues before work reaches final review - review-ready is the baseline expectation, not the goal

โ€ข Communicate directly and professionally with clients on document requests, return status, and open questions

โ€ข Identify potential tax planning opportunities that surface during preparation and escalate them to the Tax Planning team - you are part of a bigger picture here

โ€ข Maintain clean, organized workpapers and documentation on every file

โ€ข Know what you do not know and raise it early - the firm culture rewards that, and decision paralysis is what they are actively working against

โ€ข Support workflow efficiency and contribute feedback on process improvements as you get up to speed

What You Bring

โ€ข 4+ years of public accounting tax experience - this is a senior role and will be screened as one

โ€ข Strong independent preparation experience across 1040s, S-Corps, Partnerships, and Corporate returns

โ€ข Multi-state filing experience

โ€ข Experience reviewing your own work and catching technical issues before they reach final review

โ€ข ProConnect Tax experience strongly preferred - candidates with deep experience in other professional tax platforms and a clear ability to ramp will be considered

โ€ข Client communication skills - you follow up, you write clearly, and clients trust you to manage their work without handholding

โ€ข Ability to manage a portfolio of clients and deadlines with minimal supervision in a fully remote environment

โ€ข The kind of quiet confidence that means you know what you know, you know what you do not know, and you are not afraid to say either

โ€ข Hungry, humble, and technically sharp - the firm evaluates culture fit with the same seriousness as technical fit

Preferred: EA or CPA Experience with high-net-worth individual returns, complex multi-entity structures, and basis-related issues. Familiarity with QuickBooks, ClickUp, Corvee, Excel, or Google Workspace.

The Culture in Plain Terms

This is a small, tight-knit remote team where everyone wears multiple hats and everyone's work is visible. The firm shares financials with the team, gives direct feedback, and expects accountability in return. They are not looking for someone who needs to be managed - they are looking for someone who can be trusted. If you make a mistake, own it early and they will help you fix it. If you have a question, ask it in the moment. The standard is not perfection, it is honesty, ownership, and follow-through.

The schedule is structured: 9:00am to 6:00pm Eastern with a 1:00pm to 2:00pm lunch, Monday through Friday. No weekend work, no 60-hour weeks. Work from anywhere you want - cabin in the woods, coffee shop, home office - as long as you are present, reachable, and producing during those hours.

What This Role is Not

โ€ข It is not a fit for someone with only seasonal or basic 1040 preparation experience

โ€ข It is not a role where you wait to be told what to do next - ownership of your workload is the baseline

โ€ข It is not a remote role with a "work whenever you want" schedule - team members are present and available 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. EST.

โ€ข It is not a back-office position where you never talk to clients

Compensation and Setup

โ€ข Base Salary: $85,000 - $115,000 DOE

โ€ข Benefits: 100% employee health insurance coverage

โ€ข Certification Bonuses: CPA $2,000 / EA $1,500 / MSA or MST completion $2,500 / Firm-approved advanced CPE $500

โ€ข Education Assistance: Up to $5,250 annually after one year

โ€ข CPE Access: CPE.com included

โ€ข Work Setup: Fully remote, Eastern or Central time zone required

โ€ข Schedule: 9:00am - 6:00pm Eastern with 1:00pm - 2:00pm lunch, Monday through Friday

โ€ข Meetings: Required virtual meetings and semiannual in-person conferences

If you are a senior-level tax professional who takes ownership of your work, communicates with confidence, and wants to be part of a firm that actually invests in the people on its team, reach out. The need is real, the opportunity is solid, and the right person will be rewarded financially, professionally and personally.
