Job description

The Lab Technician supports Liberty University's program by assisting the instructor in both classroom and laboratory settings. This role is responsible for independently maintaining a safe, organized, and efficient learning environment by overseeing equipment, enforcing safety protocols, and managing lab operations-including inventory, projects, and student progress. The Lab Technician plays a key role in fostering hands-on learning experiences that prepare students for success in trades and construction careers. This position requires in-person work at an off-campus location in Altavista, VA. Lab Techs will create remediation plans as needed to assist students with improved technique when conducting performance tests, strive to employ a variety of techniques for the development of good learning conditions, view each student as a unique individual, and provide for individual differences, abilities, and interests. Lab Techs are essential to Liberty University's mission of Training Champions for Christ. It is expected that Techs model a personal commitment to the goals and values of Liberty University, engage in an active commitment to, and experience of, personal spiritual formation within a biblically-informed Christian worldview.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Classroom and lab support: Assist the instructor during lessons, demonstrations, and hands-on activities.
  • Safety oversight: Monitor student use of tools and equipment, enforce safety procedures, and maintain compliance with university standards.
  • Receive, organize, and distribute materials for student projects
  • Be able to perform, supervise, and instruct trade-related work, including independent thinking in essential functions and decision-making ability
  • Cleanliness and organization: Ensure the lab and classroom remain clean, orderly, and conducive to learning.
  • Student support: Guide students on proper tool usage and techniques.
  • Lift a minimum of 50lb
  • Strictly adheres to Liberty University policies, representing the University in an exemplary manner.
  • Works effectively as a team member, embracing and fostering LU's Christian model and Mission - Training Champions for Christ
  • Perform other tasks as required by the instructor or administrative staff

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
The Lab Tech has no formal supervisory role and is tasked with maintaining a safe environment in the classroom and lab.
QUALIFICATIONS AND CREDENTIALS
Education and Experience
High school Diploma or GED is required. The Technical Studies Lab Tech must have a minimum of four years of field experience in their given trade or a certificate in the trade. The applicant's resume should demonstrate this experience and should reflect both residential and commercial work. It is preferred that the Lab Tech holds a degree and/or licenses or certificates related to their field, and any combination thereof.
ABILITIES AND COMPETENCIES ESSENTIAL TO THE FUNCTION OF THE JOB
Communication and Comprehension
  • Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing to convey clear, well articulated information.
  • Ability to understand, speak, and write English in order to convey messages and correspond in an articulate and professional manner.
  • Possess public communication skills that allow professional representation of Liberty University.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Computer skills.
Problem Solving
  • Intuitively able to reason, analyze information and events, and apply judgment to solve problems of both a routine and complex nature.
Physical and Sensory Abilities
  • May be required to travel
  • May be required to sit to perform deskwork or type on a keyboard.
  • Regularly required to hear and speak to effectively communicate orally.
  • Regularly required to stand, walk, and climb stairs to move about the campus.
  • Handle materials, reach overhead, kneel or stoop in order to conduct business.
  • Regularly lift 10 or fewer pounds. However, must be able to lift 50 pounds.
  • Regularly required to perform work related to the trade.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Work Environment
This position will require the employee to work in a setting similar to fieldwork. This can include working in uncontrolled climates, loud work areas, and hazardous conditions.
Driving Requirements
If the employee is required to travel in performing the duties and responsibilities of the position, the use of one's personal vehicle (or LU vehicles) may be required for travel. Proof of a valid driver's license, an acceptable DMV record, LU Driving Approval, and liability insurance is required when driving in the performance of the employee's position.

Compensation is determined based on factors such as qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, along with University needs and external market conditions. Market benchmarks may be used, as appropriate, in combination with internal equity to ensure pay is fair and aligned with the broader compensation structure.
The position may also be eligible for comprehensive benefits, including health insurance, retirement plans, and tuition assistance.
