What is a remote DevOps engineer?

A Remote DevOps engineer is a professional who works from a remote location to manage and automate an organization's IT infrastructure, development, and deployment processes. Their main goal is to bridge the gap between software development and IT operations, ensuring that software can be released quickly, reliably, and efficiently. Remote DevOps engineers use tools like CI/CD pipelines, configuration management, and cloud platforms to streamline workflows and improve system reliability. They collaborate with development and operations teams using online communication and project management tools.

How do remote DevOps professionals typically collaborate with development and operations teams across different time zones?

Remote DevOps professionals often use a combination of collaboration tools such as Slack, Jira, and Zoom to stay connected with development and operations teams. They rely heavily on clear documentation, version control systems, and automated workflows to ensure smooth handoffs and consistent processes across time zones. Regular stand-up meetings, asynchronous communication, and shared dashboards help maintain alignment on priorities and progress, making it possible to address incidents and deploy updates efficiently despite geographical differences.

Yes, many DevOps roles can be performed remotely, especially those focused on cloud infrastructure, automation, and software deployment. Remote DevOps positions often require strong skills in tools like Docker, Kubernetes, and CI/CD pipelines, along with good communication and collaboration abilities. However, some companies may prefer on-site presence for certain tasks or team coordination.

Is 40 too old to learn remote DevOps?

Age is not a barrier to learning or working as a remote DevOps engineer. Success depends on acquiring relevant skills such as scripting, cloud platforms, and automation tools, which can be learned at any age through online courses and hands-on practice.

The Oregon Department of Justice (DOJ), Information Services Section is seeking to hire a Senior Power Platform Developer (Information Systems Specialist 8) to serve as a seniorlevel authority, architect, and technical leader for our enterprise Microsoft Power Platform ecosystem spanning Power Apps, Power Automate, Power Pages, Dataverse, Power BI integrations, and AIenabled capabilities. In this role, you will deliver expert consultation, design leadership, and platform engineering across DOJ divisions to build secure, reliable, compliant, and userfocused business applications that directly support missioncritical operations. You will ensure all solutions meet DOJ security baselines, follow enterprise governance standards, adhere to FTI, PII, CJIS, and NIST 80053 requirements, and integrate seamlessly with enterprise systems, data platforms, identity controls, and external partners-using modern lifecycle, auditability, and compliance patterns.

Operating within the Dev/Ops Experience, you will lead solution architecture, oversee Application Lifecycle Management (ALM), establish reusable components, evaluate platform capabilities, and provide guidance to developers and business units. You will define technical direction for Power Platform, collaborate with enterprise security, architecture, and data teams, advise management on roadmap decisions, mentor junior developers, and help ensure DOJ's lowcode environment remains stable, scalable, and aligned with enterprise strategy.

This role is a hybrid of remote work and in-office work. Remote work is embraced to the fullest extent possible without interfering with business. There is an expectation of reporting to the Salem office occasionally for scheduled team meetings. The finalist must reside in the state of Oregon by the time of appointment. Apply today!

Primary Job Duties (In Part)

  • Enterprise Application & Automation Delivery: Design, develop, and implement advanced Power Platform solutions (canvas/modeldriven apps, automated flows, multistage processes, Power Pages, Dataverse, AI Copilot); lead requirements analysis to translate complex needs into secure, scalable, usercentered applications; define enterprisegrade UX patterns, connectors, custom APIs, and integration layers; provide Tier 3 escalation support and guidance to junior developers and customers.

  • Power Platform Governance and Compliance: Ensure operational reliability, performance, and compliance across the Power Platform; monitor capacity, environments, connectors, licensing, run histories, DLP policies, and environmentlevel controls; enforce governance (naming conventions, data classification, security roles, lifecycle retention); oversee versioning, dependencies, environment strategy, and risk mitigation, coordinating with Information Security (NISTaligned controls, auditing, logging) and infrastructure teams (identity, integrations, platform sustainability).

  • Power Platform Architecture, Integrations, and ALM: Architect secure integrations with enterprise systems (SharePoint Online, Azure services, SQL, SaaS, DOJ data platforms); guide enterprise/custom connectors, APIs, and integration patterns; lead ALM (managed/unmanaged solutions, Dev/Test/Prod pipelines, GitHub/Azure DevOps automation, standardized deployments); run proofs of concept, evaluate capability updates, and recommend new Microsoft features/approaches that strengthen DOJ's digital service experience; provide authoritative guidance in multiteam modernization efforts.

  • Enterprise Integration Planning and Coordination: Research, evaluate, and recommend platformwide improvements, enterprise patterns, plugins, governance changes, and adoption strategies; create roadmaps for app modernization, workflow automation, lowcode maturity, and crossagency collaboration; develop architectural reviews, business cases, and impact analyses; contribute to statewide and DOJ architecture forums; lead planning for major releases, security updates, change windows, operational readiness, and customerexperience improvements.

  • Other duties as assigned.
