Remote Developers and Remote Software Engineers share similar skills and credentials, often working remotely in tech environments. Both roles are in high demand and frequently searched for by employers and job seekers alike.

What Is the Job of a Remote Developer?

Remote developers, or remote software developers, design and create computer software programs and applications for their employer or client. Unlike in-house developers, remote developers work from home or another location outside of the office. As a remote developer, you discuss the kind of program you need to create, making sure to clarify with your department or with your client what they need in their application. You may develop an entirely new program or improve an existing one. Remote developers are responsible for a program’s overall function, and they design precise workflow charts that explain to programmers what code is needed for different aspects of the program. Remote developers may also design tests and protocols for the QA department to follow when they are testing the application.

What are remote developers?

Remote developers are software professionals who work from locations outside of a traditional office environment, often from home or co-working spaces. They use digital tools to collaborate with team members and clients, writing code, fixing bugs, and participating in project meetings online. Remote developers enjoy flexibility in their work location and hours, but they also need strong communication skills and self-motivation. This role is popular in the tech industry, enabling companies to access talent from around the world.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Developer, you need strong programming skills, problem-solving abilities, and experience with software development methodologies, often supported by a relevant degree or coding certifications. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, remote collaboration tools (e.g., Slack, Jira), and cloud-based development environments is typically required. Excellent self-motivation, time management, and clear written communication set standout remote developers apart. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering high-quality code, collaborating effectively across distributed teams, and maintaining productivity independently.

What are some common challenges faced by remote developers, and how can they be managed effectively?

Remote developers often encounter challenges such as communication barriers, feelings of isolation, and managing work-life balance due to the lack of physical boundaries between home and work. To overcome these, it's important to establish clear communication channels with your team, set regular check-ins, and use collaboration tools effectively. Additionally, creating a dedicated workspace and setting defined work hours can help maintain productivity and personal well-being. Many companies also support remote developers through virtual team-building activities and flexible schedules.

Birmingham, AL • On-site, Remote

Full-time

Job description

Calling your doctor shouldn't be harder than seeing your doctor. But at most practices, patients wait on hold, front-office staff drown in ring queues, and revenue walks out the door with every missed call.

Transform9 builds AI agents that answer every call for physician practices - scheduling appointments, routing callers, and resolving routine requests in seconds, around the clock. Our agents integrate directly with each practice's EHR, practice management, and phone systems, and adapt to how their front office actually works.

Our agents have handled millions of patient calls for thousands of providers, cut average hold times by 90%, and decreased call abandonment by 80%. We're headquartered in Birmingham, AL, and growing fast.

About the role

Transform9's platform handles real patient calls around the clock. The infrastructure has to be reliable, scalable, and secure - there is no acceptable downtime. As our Infrastructure / DevOps Engineer, you'll own the AWS infrastructure that runs the platform, build and maintain the CI/CD pipelines that ship it, and grow into a Site Reliability function as the team scales. This role is for someone who thinks in systems, automates everything, and takes platform reliability personally.

What you'll do

  • Design, build, and manage AWS infrastructure for a real-time, high-availability voice AI platform
  • Own CI/CD pipelines - build, test, deploy, and rollback automation across all environments
  • Define and implement infrastructure-as-code using Terraform, CDK, or equivalent
  • Monitor platform health, define SLOs/SLAs, and build alerting and observability tooling
  • Respond to and lead resolution of infrastructure-level incidents; drive post-mortems
  • Harden infrastructure for HIPAA compliance - encryption, access controls, audit logging, and network security
  • Partner with engineering teams to optimize system performance, cost, and scalability
  • Grow the SRE practice: runbooks, incident response playbooks, chaos engineering, and reliability reviews

Location

Remote (US). If you're in the Birmingham, AL area, this role is hybrid from our office (3 days in office / 2 remote).

Requirements

  • 5+ years in infrastructure, DevOps, or cloud engineering roles
  • Deep hands-on AWS experience (ECS/EKS, Lambda, RDS/Aurora, S3, VPC, IAM, CloudWatch, and related services)
  • Proficiency with infrastructure-as-code (Terraform preferred)
  • Strong CI/CD pipeline experience (GitHub Actions, Jenkins, or equivalent)
  • Solid understanding of networking, security groups, load balancing, and DNS
  • Experience with container orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes, or ECS)
  • Familiarity with observability tooling (Datadog, Grafana, CloudWatch, or equivalent)
  • Understanding of HIPAA infrastructure requirements (encryption at rest/in transit, audit trails, access controls)

Nice to have

  • Site Reliability Engineering background or formal SRE experience
  • Experience supporting real-time or high-throughput systems (voice, streaming, or similar)
  • AWS certifications (Solutions Architect, DevOps Engineer, or SysOps)
  • Experience with multi-region or active-active deployment architectures
  • Database administration or performance tuning experience

Benefits

  • Top-tier health coverage: medical, dental & vision
  • 401(k)
  • Paid time off + holidays, and paid parental leave

If you want to fix the front door of healthcare, we'd love to hear from you.

Transform9 is an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, or veteran status.

Note: the Transform9 team will only email you from a transform9.com email address.
