Position Title: Field Services Technician/Field OPS
Location: Macon/Savannah, GA
Reports To: Director of OSP
Employment Type: Full-Time
Summary:
As a Telecommunications Technician, you will play a crucial role in the installation, maintenance, repair, and emergency restoration of telecommunications infrastructure, focusing on Inside Plant (ISP), Outside Plant (OSP), IP, and SONET electronics. You will be responsible for ensuring the integrity and functionality of a statewide fiber optic network, encompassing various network elements and equipment. This position requires availability for on-call duty, statewide and occasional overnight travel, and adherence to a 24 x 365 Operations and Maintenance (O&M) environment.
Responsibilities:
  • Install, maintain, and repair SONET-based and IP-based equipment.
  • Deploy and maintain fiber optic infrastructure inside and outside plants, including cable installation and connectivity.
  • Utilize standardized tests to gather data on fiber optic cable plant, SONET equipment, IP equipment, and other voice/data/video equipment to ensure network integrity.
  • Analyze, recommend, and implement network and operational improvements, including methods and procedures, software updates, and firmware updates.
  • Maintain accurate network documentation and activity records.
  • Troubleshoot, isolate, and repair or recommend solutions for customer and core network problems.
  • Track chronic problems and resolve them in collaboration with Network Engineering and customers.

Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to analyze and isolate IP and SONET network problems and effectively communicate them to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills for interfacing with customers, internal personnel, and vendors.
  • Proficiency in network protocol concepts including SDH/SONET, DS3, DS1, and IP in various environments such as Lucent, Movaz, Juniper, Fujitsu, and Cisco.
  • Proficiency in SONET and IP electronics and photonics.
  • Experience with fiber plant including fusion and mechanical splicing, and fiber cable trouble isolation.
  • Familiarity with routing protocols (RIP, OSPF, I/EBGP) and OSI layers 2, 3, and 4 switching concepts.
  • Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple tasks in a high-stress environment.
  • Ability to operate standard office machinery, automobiles, and perform automobile travel.
