What is Remote Design Innovation?

Remote Design Innovation refers to the process of creating and implementing new design solutions while collaborating with teams that are geographically dispersed. It leverages digital tools and platforms to enable brainstorming, prototyping, and iteration without the need for in-person meetings. This approach allows organizations to access a broader talent pool, foster diverse perspectives, and maintain productivity across different time zones. Remote design innovation is especially valuable in today's globalized and flexible work environments, helping companies remain agile and competitive.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Design Innovation Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Design Innovation Specialist, you need strong skills in creative problem-solving, user-centered design, and a background in design or related fields, often supported by a relevant degree. Proficiency with digital collaboration tools (such as Figma, Miro, or Adobe Creative Suite) and experience with design thinking methodologies are typically required. Exceptional communication, adaptability, and the ability to collaborate effectively across virtual teams are crucial soft skills. These abilities ensure innovative solutions are developed efficiently while maintaining alignment with team goals in a remote environment.

How do professionals in Remote Design Innovation typically collaborate effectively with team members across different time zones?

In Remote Design Innovation roles, collaboration often happens asynchronously due to distributed teams. Professionals use digital tools such as virtual whiteboards, project management platforms, and video conferencing to share ideas and iterate on designs. Regular check-ins are scheduled to accommodate various time zones, ensuring everyone stays aligned on project goals. Communication clarity and proactive documentation are crucial, as team members may not always be online simultaneously. This environment fosters flexibility and encourages creative problem-solving while maintaining a strong team connection.

Job description

Pinterest is looking for a methodical and thoughtful Product Designer II to join the Design Innovation team. You'll help evolve our product design language and craft intuitive, coherent, and delightful experiences across surfaces. You'll collaborate closely with product, engineering, research, and data science partners to shape end-to-end experiences that feel uniquely Pinterest, raise the quality bar, and explore new opportunities for innovation, including AI-powered experiences. You have a knack for visual detail as much as holistic systems thinking. You're a problem solver whose designs reflect a deep understanding of user needs and business context. You're comfortable working in an iterative, experimental environment and using AI tools to accelerate your workflow while maintaining strong critical thinking, judgment, and ownership of outcomes.

What you'll do:

  • Design product experiences-systematically, interactively, and visually-with a high bar for craft and consistency across the Pinterest product ecosystem.
  • Partner with Design Innovation teammates and cross-functional partners to evolve our product design language and bring it to life in key product surfaces and features.
  • Explore and prototype new interaction patterns and end-to-end flows that make Pinterest feel more modern, memorable, and uniquely "Pinterest."
  • Use AI tools to accelerate parts of your workflow-from early concept exploration and competitive/visual research to generating variations, content, and structured design artifacts-while validating outputs for quality, alignment with our brand, and user needs.
  • Collaborate closely with engineering, product management, and research to develop impactful, user-centric, and data-informed solutions; work with engineers throughout implementation to ensure high-quality execution.
  • Incorporate insights from qualitative and quantitative research, experiments, and marketplace/AI trends to refine design directions and identify new opportunities for innovation.
  • Contribute to design reviews and critique, helping to uphold and inspire a high level of design execution and inclusive, accessible experiences across the team.

What we're looking for:

  • Experience designing for consumer products, with strong visual and interaction design skills demonstrated in a portfolio of shipped or in-progress work.
  • Ability to design within and extend a design system, balancing consistency with thoughtful innovation across surfaces and platforms.
  • Demonstrated experience using AI tools (such as LLMs or design/creative AI tools) to augment your design workflow-for example, to explore concepts, structure information, or generate and refine content-paired with a clear approach to validating accuracy, quality, and brand alignment.
  • Strong product thinking and systems mindset: you can connect craft decisions to user outcomes, product strategy, and measurable impact.
  • Great communication and storytelling skills, with the ability to clearly articulate design decisions, tradeoffs, and how AI fits into your process to cross-functional partners at different levels.
  • High attention to detail and a sense of ownership over the quality and cohesion of the product experience, including accessibility and inclusive design considerations.
  • Collaborative, low-ego working style with a growth mindset; you're excited to learn, give and receive feedback, and contribute to a positive, inclusive team culture.
  • Bachelor's degree in design, a related field or equivalent experience.
