In all cases, you work with a team of other designers and engineers, each contributing expertise to create a final product.

How to make $100,000 a year working from home?

A remote design engineer can reach a $100,000 annual income by gaining specialized skills in high-demand areas such as CAD, UX/UI, or product design, building a strong portfolio, and working for companies that offer competitive salaries or freelance projects. Earning this level often requires experience, a solid understanding of design tools, and the ability to manage multiple projects independently.

What is a Remote Design Engineer?

A Remote Design Engineer is a professional who creates and develops product designs, systems, or structures while working from a location outside of a traditional office, often from home. They use computer-aided design (CAD) software and collaborate with teams via digital communication tools. Remote Design Engineers can work in various fields such as mechanical, electrical, or civil engineering, and are responsible for turning ideas into detailed technical plans. This role requires strong communication skills, technical expertise, and the ability to work independently. By working remotely, they can contribute to projects from virtually anywhere in the world.

Can design engineers work remotely?

Design engineers can often work remotely, especially in roles that involve computer-aided design (CAD), simulation, and collaboration tools. Job description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Product Design Lead based in Netherlands.

This is a high-impact leadership role at the intersection of product design, systems thinking, and complex infrastructure. You will lead a small, high-calibre design team responsible for shaping the core merchant experience within a sophisticated payments platform used by global businesses. The product surface is deeply technical and highly consequential, requiring clarity in environments where flows are conditional, stateful, and operationally critical. You will operate as a hands-on design leader, balancing strategic ownership with deep individual contribution. Working closely with Product and Engineering, you will help define what gets built, why it matters, and how it behaves in real-world use. The environment is remote-first, globally distributed, and highly autonomous, with a strong emphasis on craft, ownership, and thoughtful collaboration.

Accountabilities:

You will own the design vision, execution quality, and team development for a critical product domain, ensuring both strategic alignment and hands-on contribution to the most complex problems.

  • Define and own the end-to-end experience strategy and design quality bar for your product area
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a small team of product designers through critique, coaching, and hands-on collaboration
  • Contribute directly to product design work, spending a significant portion of time in the tools solving high-impact problems
  • Partner as an equal with Product and Engineering leaders to shape roadmap direction and product decisions
  • Lead research efforts to uncover user needs across multiple personas and translate insights into product direction
  • Strengthen and extend the design system by identifying gaps and building reusable patterns and components
  • Navigate complex trade-offs between ideal user experience, technical constraints, and operational realities
  • Build and evolve design processes, critique standards, and delivery practices that enable a small team to operate at high velocity and high quality
Requirements:

You bring strong experience designing and leading work on complex, systems-heavy products, combined with the ability to elevate both craft and team performance. You are comfortable operating with autonomy and making high-stakes product decisions in ambiguous environments.

  • Proven experience designing and shipping complex SaaS, fintech, infrastructure, or developer-focused products
  • Prior experience leading or mentoring product designers, formally or informally
  • Strong craft skills across interaction design, visual design, and information architecture
  • Demonstrated ability to own a product domain from early ambiguity through to shipped outcomes
  • Experience working closely with Product and Engineering in a highly collaborative environment
  • Ability to operate independently with high autonomy and minimal direction
  • Strong systems thinking and comfort working in technically complex environments
  • Experience with payments, financial systems, or regulated domains is a strong plus
  • Experience contributing to or scaling a design system is an advantage
Benefits:
  • Fully remote and globally distributed work environment
  • Competitive equity or share options package
  • Generous paid time off with a minimum threshold and uncapped flexibility
  • Private healthcare coverage (where applicable)
  • Learning and development budget to support professional growth
  • Home office setup support and high-quality equipment provision
  • Access to co-working spaces and global workations
  • Annual company retreat and team offsites
  • Strong culture of autonomy, ownership, and meaningful product impact
