What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Deck Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Deck Designer, you need proficiency in architectural design principles, spatial planning, and a strong understanding of building codes, often supported by a degree in architecture, design, or related fields. Mastery of CAD software such as AutoCAD, SketchUp, or Revit, along with knowledge of project management and collaboration tools, is typically required. Strong communication, creativity, and attention to detail help you effectively interpret client needs and deliver visually compelling designs remotely. These skills ensure that designs are both functional and aesthetically pleasing while meeting client specifications and regulatory requirements, leading to successful project outcomes.

What are some common challenges faced by remote deck designers and how can they be managed?

Remote deck designers often face challenges such as limited on-site access, which can make it harder to visualize the space and communicate effectively with clients or contractors. To overcome this, they typically rely on detailed photos, measurements, and virtual meetings to ensure accurate designs. Building strong, proactive communication habits and using collaborative design software can help bridge the distance and ensure everyone stays aligned throughout the project. Additionally, understanding local building codes and materials remotely requires thorough research and sometimes direct coordination with local suppliers.

What is a remote deck designer?

A remote deck designer is a professional who creates plans and visual designs for decks, such as patios or outdoor spaces, while working from a remote location rather than on-site. They use digital tools and software to communicate with clients, understand their needs, and develop detailed drawings or 3D renderings of deck projects. Remote deck designers may collaborate with contractors, landscapers, or homeowners to ensure the design is functional, aesthetically pleasing, and compliant with local building codes. Their work often includes selecting materials, planning layouts, and offering recommendations based on the client's budget and space. This role allows for flexible work arrangements and often involves a mix of creative design and technical skills.

Job description

About Animalz
Animalz is a content marketing agency that partners with B2B SaaS companies, venture capital firms, and other tech organizations to drive long-term, sustainable growth through high-quality content. Our fully remote team delivers content strategies tailored to each customer's goals and context, and we're growing our design services to bring the same level of quality to the visual side of our work.
Our customers include industry leaders like Amplitude, Ramp, and Wistia, as well as high-growth early-stage startups.
About the Role
We're looking for freelance production designers to join our growing design team. You'll take established brand assets and design briefs and turn them into polished, professional marketing deliverables: ebooks, reports, slide decks, social media graphics, and inline blog visuals for our B2B technology customers.
This is an execution-focused role. You'll work from briefs and brand guidelines provided by our Creative Director and content team, applying existing visual systems to create layouts that are clean, consistent, and on-brand. You won't be inventing brands from scratch. You'll be assembling the puzzle pieces into something that looks great and tells a clear story.
The right person is fast, reliable, detail-oriented, and takes pride in production craft. You understand that great layout design isn't just "placing things on a page"-it's making content easier to read, more engaging, and more persuasive.
What You'll Do

  • Design ebooks, reports, and whitepapers: Lay out long-form content with clear visual hierarchy, incorporating charts/graphs, pull quotes, icons, imagery, and infographics as needed
  • Create presentation and slide deck designs: Build visually compelling slides that support a narrative, including data visualizations, diagrams, and light animation where appropriate
  • Produce social media graphics: Design graphics for LinkedIn, Twitter/X, and other platforms-carousels, quote cards, checklists, and promotional visuals
  • Design inline blog graphics: Create supporting visuals for blog posts-diagrams, flowcharts, illustrated concepts, and data visualizations
  • Follow brand guidelines precisely: Apply established color palettes, typography, icon sets, and visual treatments consistently across all deliverables
  • Incorporate feedback efficiently: Respond to revision requests from the Creative Director quickly and accurately
  • Deliver organized, final files: Export assets in the correct formats (PNG, SVG, JPEG, PDF, GIF) with clean file naming and organization
What We're Looking For
  • 2+ years of production/layout design experience, preferably in an agency, studio, or freelance context serving multiple customers
  • Strong layout and typography skills: You know how to create visual hierarchy, use whitespace effectively, and make dense content feel approachable
  • Proficiency in Figma (required)-this is our primary design tool and familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop)
  • Data visualization ability: You can take raw data and turn it into clear, visually appealing charts, graphs, and infographics
  • Speed and consistency: You can produce high-quality work efficiently and maintain visual consistency across deliverables for the same customer
  • Attention to detail: Pixel-perfect alignment, consistent spacing, correct brand colors. You notice the small things matter
  • Self-directed and reliable: You manage your time well, communicate proactively about deadlines, and deliver when you say you will
  • Comfortable with feedback: You take creative direction well and don't take revision requests personally
Nice to Have
  • Experience designing for B2B SaaS or technology brands
  • Basic animation/GIF creation skills
  • Experience with AI-assisted design tools
  • Familiarity with interactive PDF creation
Working Arrangements
  • Type: Freelance/contract - hours will vary based on customer workload, with potential for consistent ongoing work as the practice grows
  • Location: Fully remote
  • Timezone: Some overlap with US business hours required, but flexible for async workflows
  • Compensation: $40 - $50/hour USD
