The Role

Step into a pivotal leadership role as Director, Data Governance, where you will shape the future of Deckers' data landscape. You'll develop, implement, and oversee enterprise-wide data governance, data quality, and data management policies, ensuring our data is accurate, secure, consistent, discoverable, and compliant. You'll partner with cross-functional teams to build a governance framework that supports trusted data products, data mesh principles, and enterprise analytics initiatives. Your work will empower the business to make data-driven decisions with confidence and integrity.

Your Impact

  • Develop and maintain enterprise data governance strategies, frameworks, and policies aligned with business priorities, risk posture, and compliance obligations
  • Establish and operate governance structures that support domain ownership, data product stewardship, and data mesh enablement
  • Draft, publish, and maintain standards covering data quality, metadata management, privacy, security, access controls, classification, and retention
  • Partner with Legal, Privacy, Information Security, and Compliance teams to ensure governance policies align with regulatory requirements such as GDPR and CCPA
  • Define data quality metrics, thresholds, and monitoring approaches, driving accountability through transparent scorecards and remediation processes
  • Lead governance operationalization by embedding controls into delivery workflows and data product lifecycle processes
  • Partner with platform and engineering teams to implement governance capabilities into core data platforms, including cataloging, lineage tracking, and access governance
  • Build and lead a community of practice for data stewards and domain data owners, including training and ongoing enablement
  • Establish and run governance forums and decision-making processes to resolve data ownership, definition, quality, and access issues
  • Provide executive-level reporting on governance maturity, compliance posture, data quality health, and key risks
  • Lead and develop a governance team, setting objectives, coaching talent, and ensuring consistent delivery of governance outcomes

Who You Are

  • Bachelor's degree required, preferably in Information Systems, Business Administration, Law, or a related field; Master's degree preferred
  • Certifications in data governance or data management (CDMP, DAMA), privacy (CIPP/US, CIPT), or compliance are a plus
  • 10 to 15 years of experience in data governance, data management, data compliance, or a related field
  • 5+ years of leadership experience leading governance initiatives across complex, matrixed organizations
  • Experience working in regulated environments with a focus on data privacy, data protection, and regulatory compliance
  • Experience supporting modern data architecture initiatives including data mesh and cloud-native platforms preferred
  • Demonstrated experience building governance programs that include policy definition, stewardship models, data quality management, and tooling enablement
  • Strong knowledge of data governance frameworks, metadata management, and data quality practices
  • Familiarity with privacy regulations (GDPR, CCPA) and security frameworks and controls
  • Excellent leadership and communication skills with the ability to influence across business and technical audiences
  • Ability to translate regulatory and policy requirements into practical, actionable guidance for teams
  • Strong program management, organizational, and documentation skills
  • Proactive, detail-oriented, and able to work independently in a fast-paced environment
  • Comfortable working in a global, matrixed organization with multiple stakeholders and competing priorities

Comp Team adds the salary range for roles based in Goleta, CA, US Remote, or any other state that requires pay posting. Comp will not add the salary range for roles based in states that do not require pay posting, such as Oregon.

$186,000 - 200,000

The salary range posted reflects the minimum and maximum target for new hire salaries for this role in our Goleta, CA location. Individual pay will be determined by location and additional factors, including job related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Your recruiter can share more about the specific salary for your preferred location during the hiring process.
