Job description

Senior Staff Engineer (Backend)About the Role

We're looking for a Senior Staff Backend Engineer to set the technical direction for Uber's Autonomous Vehicle (AV) and emerging business Customer Obsession experiences. This role will own architecture across AV, Fleet, Uber for Business, and Direct integrations, helping create a unified technical foundation as these businesses grow in scale and complexity.

Key areas of focus include proactive trip-lifecycle support, Agentic AI capabilities, and building reliable end-to-end testing and quality frameworks as AV expands from pilots to multi-city, multi-partner production.

What You'll Do
  • Define the backend architecture and technical strategy for AV customer support systems.
  • Establish scalable integration patterns across Fleet, U4B, Direct, and other emerging businesses.
  • Partner with the Customer Obsession Platform team to leverage shared platform and Agentic AI capabilities.
  • Build proactive trip-lifecycle support, reliability, and end-to-end testing strategies.
  • Drive alignment across Engineering, Product, Operations, and platform teams.
  • Mentor Senior engineers toward Staff-level impact.
Basic Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related technical field.
  • Experience: 10+ years of professional full-time software engineering experience.
  • Technical Proficiency: Strong expertise in modern backend languages-specifically Go, Java, or C++.
  • Extensive backend engineering and distributed systems experience.
  • Experience designing and operating large-scale, highly available systems.
  • Proven technical leadership across multiple teams and complex initiatives.
  • Strong system design, architecture, and cross-functional communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Generative AI, LLMs, or Agentic AI systems.
  • Experience with AV, mobility, fleet, logistics, or real-time systems.
  • Experience with customer support or workflow platforms.
  • Track record of technical leadership at Senior Staff, or equivalent scope.
