What is a remote creative writer?

Remote creative writers are professionals who craft original written content such as stories, articles, scripts, or marketing materials while working from a location outside of a traditional office. They often collaborate with clients, editors, or creative teams using digital tools and communication platforms. This role allows for flexibility in work environment and schedule, making it suitable for those who prefer or require remote work options.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote creative writer?

To thrive as a Remote Creative Writer, you need strong writing, research, and storytelling abilities, typically supported by a background in English, journalism, or communications. Familiarity with content management systems (CMS), collaboration platforms like Google Workspace, and SEO tools is often required. Exceptional time management, creativity, and self-motivation set outstanding creative writers apart, especially when working independently. These skills and qualities are crucial for consistently producing engaging content, meeting deadlines, and effectively collaborating with remote teams.

What are some common challenges faced by remote creative writers, and how can they be effectively managed?

Remote creative writers often face challenges such as maintaining self-discipline, managing time effectively, and overcoming creative blocks without the immediate support of an in-person team. To address these challenges, it helps to establish a structured daily routine, set clear goals, and use collaboration tools to stay connected with editors and other team members. Regular virtual check-ins and feedback sessions can also provide valuable support and foster a sense of community, even when working remotely.

Job description

We are Skyward.

That is, a love for people, for improvement, for human advancement through information technology. We are a people-centered business with a desire to serve others. We are diverse and unified; creative and collaborative; a collection of complementary, not competing talents. And though on the surface we remain relaxed, beneath, a torrent of energy links us to our civic tech mission.

We stand by our values, and we won’t compromise on any of them.

Integrity: We’re conscientious, intentional, and empathetic. Our words and actions align. That’s our character. Please don’t ask us to play another part, we’re poor actors.
Compassionate: If we may borrow a quote from Theodore Roosevelt: “No one cares how much you know until they know how much you care.” Because our team is thoughtful and supportive, caring deeply for each other, our clients, and our work, this comes naturally.
Inquisitive: We remain students by failing openly and turning lessons into solutions.
Unconventional: For us, life isn’t what happens outside of work. Work happens inside of life and our culture erases the line often dividing the two.
Authentic: Made possible only because we embody the values listed above. We’re relaxed and fun yet intensely curious and driven. Team members are placed with thought, care, and precision to ensure that Trust, Truth, and Transparency continue to represent our brand.

Because of that, we continue Onward, Upward, and Skyward.

We need a Reporting & Technical Writer.
Do you have a low-key superpower for taking something confusing and making it make sense on the page? Are you the friend who actually reads the instructions and then rewrites them because they were terrible? Two years in, you already know that good documentation is a kindness to everyone who comes after you. If you love turning tangled information into clean, useful words, please apply.

Come join us if you're motivated to learn from others, to learn from mistakes, to be part of a future-looking and growth-oriented team.

Let's go Skyward together.

What you'll do:
  • Support a mission that matters. Help CMS keep its enterprise AI platform well-documented and its data governance clear, so the right people always know what’s going on.
  • Write it down so it scales. Produce and maintain SOPs, user guides, knowledge base articles, and technical documentation tailored to the audience.
  • Turn data into reports. Build and format recurring reports that make platform and data-governance activity easy to follow.
  • Make it accessible. Follow Section 508 and plain-language standards so documentation works for everyone.
  • Keep the source of truth tidy. Organize documentation and reporting so nothing important lives only in someone’s head.
What we’d like you to have:
  • A bachelor’s degree and 2+ years in technical writing, documentation, or reporting.
  • Genuinely strong writing and editing skills. Clear, concise, and organized.
  • Comfort with documentation and reporting tools (Confluence, Word, and the like).
  • An eye for detail and a knack for making complex things simple.
What would blow us away:
  • Experience with 508-compliant documentation or federal reporting.
  • Familiarity with data governance or technical/AI subject matter.
  • Previous experience supporting CMS or another federal agency.

Even if you don’t meet 100% of the qualifications, we encourage you to apply. At Skyward, we’re focused on hiring individuals with the right skills and passion to grow, not just checking off every box.

And now the important part. What we offer you:
  • Medical, dental, vision insurance
  • 15 days of paid leave
  • 7 days of sick leave
  • 2 days bereavement leave
  • 11 paid Federal holidays
  • Up to 40 hours for jury duty
  • 401K with 4% employer contribution (and no vesting period)
  • Up to 4 weeks of paid paternity and maternity leave
  • Company provided laptop
  • $5,000 per year for professional development
  • $600 per year for technical supplies and equipment
  • $2,000 referral bonus
  • Life and disability insurance
  • HSA and FSA
  • Legal Shield and ID Shield Voluntary Benefits
  • Opportunity to work in a collaborative, motivated team focused on modernizing government services with cutting-edge technology and innovative solutions. Who says government work can’t be exciting!

We believe great work deserves great pay. That’s why we ensure our compensation is not only competitive but also fair and transparent, as required by Maryland law. Expect a salary that matches your skills, experience, and the value you bring to the table - because you’re worth it!

At Skyward, we support flexible working hours and remote opportunities to help maintain a healthy work-life balance for all employees.

Offers of employment with Skyward are contingent upon acceptable results of a background investigation.

Applicants must have the ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust security clearance due to the nature of our work as a government contractor.

We may use artificial intelligence (AI) tools to support parts of the hiring process, such as reviewing applications, analyzing resumes, or assessing responses and identifying potential inconsistencies or verification signals in application materials based on available information. These tools assist our recruitment team but do not replace human judgment. Final hiring decisions are ultimately made by humans. If you would like more information about how your data is processed, please contact us.
