The Hartford currently has an in-house REMOTE opportunity for a Complex Litigation Attorney to litigate cases primarily in Cook and Northern Illinois Counties.

WHAT CAN YOU TELL ME ABOUT THIS POSITION?

As aComplex Litigation Attorney for The Hartford you will join a collaborative environment where you will have direct contact with our Client and Claims Professionals, along with legal assistant and associate support, while working remote. If you join our team, you will find that we foster personal growth and are all driven to provide excellent customer service to our Claims Partners and insureds. If you have a passion for the law, enjoy collaborating with peers, Claims Partners, and insureds, this tort defense attorney position is for you.

We are looking for a colleague with a strong background in civil litigation defending general liability cases, including premises liability, and products liability, motor vehicle liability, and experience in addressing risk transfer issues. The Attorney will work remotely, and generally but not exclusively make appearances Cook, Lake, Will, DuPage, and Northern Illinois area county and federal courts. The Attorney will handle the following key responsibilities:

  • Demonstrate expertise in various practice areas across personal and commercial lines of business

  • Comply with Litigation Management Guidelines

  • Analyze complex legal and factual issues, conduct extensive and develop well-reasoned legal research

  • Independently create and present defense strategies on behalf of clients

  • Prepare complex pleadings, written discovery, depositions, motions and briefs in support of defense strategies with autonomy

  • Partner with our Claims Partners to achieve the best results for our Hartford insured

  • Provide effective and timely communications, information, legal advice and other services to clients on legal and factual issues

  • Communicate with the court, witnesses, opposing counsel and co-counsel with professional diplomacy and discretion

  • Facilitate prompt, efficient and effective disposition of assigned cases

  • Independently prepare and present witnesses and evidence at trials, hearings, arbitrations and alternative dispute resolutions

  • Research, draft, file and argue substantive motions on behalf of clients

  • Provide in-house training to junior associates and/or claims partners

  • Attend continuing legal education seminars to maintain high level of professional expertise.

  • Engage in continuous improvement in the practice of law including use of Generative AI tools, vLex, Lexis, and similar research platforms.

WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR?

  • Minimum of 15 years of legal practice experience handling tort defense cases

  • JD from accredited law school and license to practice in the state of Illinois

  • Federal Trial Bar admission is required

  • Significant first-chair jury trial experience is required

  • Positive-minded and collaborative team-player attitude

  • Strong legal research and writing skills

  • Solid MS Office proficiency (Word, Excel, PowerPoint & Outlook)

  • vLex experience a plus; insurance coverage knowledge a plus

  • Self-directed with excellent organizational and prioritization skills

  • Strong computer skills and the ability to quickly leverage new software as required

WHAT ELSE CAN YOU TELL ME?

This position is a remote work position; the selected candidate will travel for appearances within Northern Illinois, generally.

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:
