About the role:

CLA is seeking a Controller to join our State and Local Government (SLG) Client Consulting and Outsourcing team, supporting clients throughout New York State.

This role will primarily involve onsite support for clients located in Western Upstate New York, with the flexibility to work remotely on an occasional basis, depending on client needs and project requirements.

Our SLG outsourcing service helps our clients transform their governmental entity with a collaborative approach that allows them to seamlessly mitigate risk, overcome challenges, meet deadlines, and identify personnel to help them with their workforce needs.

As a Controller, you will:

  • Act as the Controller for the designated clients you service.
  • Take on the role of consultant and advisor to your clients on best practices for accounting and finance-related engagements.
  • Provide project management expertise by managing multiple clients, work, and deadlines.
  • Prepare and analyze client financial statements and make recommendations.
  • Foster and build opportunities and attend industry-leading events and trainings.
  • Maintain knowledge of the client's organizational policies and procedures, federal and state policies and directives, and current accounting standards.
  • Advise management on short-term and long term-financial objectives, policies and actions.

What you will need:

  • Six years of relevant accounting and/or financial experience is required. Experience with state and local government municipalities strongly preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree is required. Combination of related experience, education, and training may be accepted in lieu of degree.
  • CPA certification preferred but not required.
  • Strong working knowledge of GAAP
  • Grants Management Experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of MUNIS preferred and/or other commonly used municipal software packages.
  • Prior project management and client management experience preferred but not required.
  • This position requires frequent travel to/from client sites and may require occasional non-local or overnight travel for client visits, training, meetings and/or other business-related purposes.
