Job description

Controller
Maven Machines
Reports to: CEO, with close partnership under a Fractional CFO
About Maven
Maven Machines is reimagining how the world moves freight. We are a fast-growing tech startup based in Pittsburgh that is building the next era of fleet management, dispatch, and infrastructure technologies for the transportation and service industries. In a few short years, we've grown from an idea to create smart driver safety tracking to becoming a fleet management and telematics company that has successfully deployed to thousands of drivers across the country with some of the nation's top 100 fleets.
About the Role
Maven is hiring a Controller to own the day-to-day finance function and help build a strong foundation for the company's next stage of growth. This is a hands-on role for someone who can bring rigor, reliability, and visibility to our financial operations while working closely with a Fractional CFO.
We are looking for a strong finance operator who can run the core accounting and finance function today and has the potential to grow over time into a broader finance leadership role, including VP of Finance or CFO.
What You'll Do
  • Own the monthly close process and deliver accurate, timely financial statements and reporting
  • Lead day-to-day accounting operations, including accruals, reconciliations, AP/AR oversight, payroll coordination, and cash management
  • Improve controls, audit readiness, and the reliability of finance processes
  • Support budgeting, forecast inputs, management reporting, and KPI visibility
  • Create a repeatable finance operating rhythm so leadership can rely on timely, accurate financial information
  • Provide financial data and analysis to support strategic decision-making
  • Identify opportunities to improve profitability and strengthen financial performance
  • Continuously improve accounting processes, workflows, and finance infrastructure
  • Partner cross-functionally with leaders across the business
What We're Looking For
  • Experience as a Controller or Assistant Controller
  • Strong accounting and finance operations foundation
  • Experience in a scaling private company; venture-backed, PE-backed, or otherwise operationally complex environments are a plus
  • Ability to operate in a hands-on environment without a large team
  • Strong process orientation, attention to detail, and follow-through
  • Clear communication skills and comfort working with non-finance leaders
  • Business judgment and interest in growing into broader finance leadership
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting
  • 3-5+ years of relevant experience
  • CPA is a plus, but not required
Why This Role Is Unique
This is more than a traditional Controller role. Maven is looking for someone who can build trust in the numbers, establish discipline across the finance function, and help make the business easier to run. The right person will have the opportunity to grow beyond core controllership responsibilities into broader finance leadership over time.
Benefits and Perks
  • Medical, Dental, and Vision Insurance
  • 401(k)
  • Generous Vacation Policy
  • Snacks, snacks and snacks
  • The opportunity to fundamentally contribute to a growing company
Healthy, Diverse Teams Breed Innovation
Maven Machines is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. We deeply believe that diverse backgrounds and experiences make better products and we seek to attract talent from all walks of life. The team at Maven is smart, friendly, and passionate and we value a healthy work environment to foster personal development and opportunities to move within our small, but quickly growing organization.
Join Us
If you are a hands-on finance leader who wants real ownership today and the opportunity to grow into a long-term finance leadership role, we'd love to hear from you.
